Awesome remake!

This film, tops the original in many ways, its much more detailed and elaborated than the original, and even if you don't like Alec Baldwin as Doc,
there is no denaying that here he's the master of subletys, pealing the layers of his skin you'll find an honorable thief trying to do the right thing, surrounded by a pack of skimming and cheating hound dogs. Ms Bassinger, Mr Woods
and the rest of the cast lend a formidable hand to the film, along with fast pacing editing and beautiful cinematography of the arizona dessert, I highly recommend this film, as an action thriller and edge of your seat extravaganza.

I don't think there's any way this is as good as the original. The best scenes were just copied from the original. And there's no way Alec Baldwin is as cool as Steve McQueen! However, I will grant you there's an excellent nude scene with Ms. Bassinger. That right there is worth seeing. And it is a decent action film in its own right.

reply

Just about the only thing worthwhile in it is the nude Kim B. scene, otherwise these movie should not even be talked about in the same sentence as the Steve Mcqueen one! Nothing against alec baldwin, but steve mcQ. is irreplaceable :)

reply

Usualy I donˇt like remakes, but i prefere this movie to the original Steve McQueen´s. Kim was so hot compared to Ali!

reply

Agreed - McQueen had an edginess Baldwin will never have. I cared about what happened to him in a way none of the remake actors made us care. Even Bassinger, who did a good job, doesn't seem to have engaged many people emotionally - all the comments seem to concern enjoyment of her sex and nude scenes. Which just about amounts to "it worked as porn" :)

THE ARIZONA DESERT IS AWESOME AND STEVE MCQUEEN WILL FOREVER BE THE MAN.
remake LOL LOL THAT WILL BE THE DAY. YOU CANNOT REMAKE STEVE MCQUEEN EVER.

reply

Terrible acting by Baldwin.

reply

I would in no way say this version is better than the original, but I certainly found this movie an engaging entertainment. Actually, a better than average re-make.

I just watched the original, and I don't really think it was THAT great. Steve McQueen was good, but not exactly WOW. Ali MacGraw was beautiful, but her acting was weak. In the remake, Baldwin and Basinger were fine, not great, not terrible. The action scenes were very good. Michael Madson was good, Jennifer Tilly was.....well....Jennifer Tilly. The biggest complaint I can make about the remake is that it was really a remake, with very minor changes from the original. They should have gone more with the Dawn of the Dead remake route. That movie kept the basic idea and setting, but had different characters, different tone.

The original came out in 1972, the remake came out in 1994, 22 years later. Now we're in 2014, 20 years after the remake. Will there be another remake? If so, who will play the leads?

I agree pretty much. I also like the idea of remaking something after a span of twenty years. Despite all these remakes and the lament that Hollywood has no original ideas the truth is Hollywood has always remade their products. Consider how many silent movies were remade into sound pictures. "The Getaway" would make a nice vehicle for the "new Hollywood" on the scene now although I think the level of talent available among this group is not inspiring, to say the least.

My question would be which of today's actresses would you want to see in the Fran role knowing we'll eventually see her wildly riding her captor while her husband has to watch from the bathroom?

reply

I don't have a familiarity with many of today's younger generation of Hollywood. I'd venture to say someone like Selma Blair who seems to be a solid actress who looks appealing .

Well everyone's entitled to their opinion but Selma Blair doesn't have much of a hot body to me. It has to be someone that you wouldn't expect to let their captor tie up her husband while she bangs him on a nearby bed. I'd love to see Selena Gomez or something like that...maybe because she did that Getaway movie with Ethan Hawke it kind of got me thinking.

reply

Yeah Selena Gomez seems vapid enough to actually do something like that. BTW, I thought of Selma Blair because of her work in WILD THINGS. The woman is "hot".

Oh you might be thinking of Neve Campbell or Denise Richards.

reply

You're right. My bad.

Okay, so I nominate Neve Campbell for a role in a second re-make.

I'm also thinking Kelly Brook as Fran. It has to be an actress that's hot that you know every guy wants and you dread losing but you think you're safe because you keep her indoors at the vet clinic that seems far away from any bustling city. Then we see Rudy come in and make all his nightmares comes true.

I've only seen it when it originally came to theatres, and I haven't seen the original yet, though I have it and plan to. I enjoy Alec Baldwin, especially when he hosts Saturday Night Live--I think along with Christopher Walken, he's the best there is at it. My girlfriend at the time and I really enjoyed it. I'd safely give it a 7/10.
