why didn't Doc kill Rudy at the hotel?

I liked this version of the flick... but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out why in the world Doc wouldn't shoot Rudy in the head while he's knocked out in the hotel. He and his wife have already killed before, and there was absolutely no doubt that Rudy was gonna come after them once he woke up (tried to kill Doc twice already) so why would a smart criminal like Doc let him live? For the life of me, I can't remember whether the same thing happened in the original.

They killed before but only in a severe case of self defense when they were being shot at. Doc had already taken Rudy down, or so he thought, and I guess in his case there is honor amoung theives. He only kills when he absolutely has to.

I see what you're saying, and you're probably right, although it really makes no sense for a sharp criminal like Doc(but, after all, it's only a movie, I know)... plus his wife shot James Wood's character in a non-self defense situation earlier.

Wasn't there already a whole lot of noise leading up to Rudy being knocked unconscious? Would either shot to the head... or a rifle butt to the skull really make any difference if Rudy's boy's hadn't heard all the other noise?

I agree with the noise factor. If he wasn't an immediate threat, then I would've tried to leave without bringing attention on to myself. I supposed he could've done something like beat him to death instead of shooting him, but then again, you would still take the chance of getting blood on yourself. The pair just wanted to be incognito and move on.

[Never trust anyone that posts on only one IMDB board.]

i was wondering this myself too

Because Doc was a thief and and outlaw, but not a cold blooded murderer.
