Running on XP?

This is one of my all time favorite games, however I can't get the CD version to run on XP.

Anyone know how?

You have to bump your computer down to 256 colours for a start and also i would suggest stopping any processes that you don't need or that suddenly start doing things on your machine without warning... This is a game that is quite buggy on new O/S's so you cannot have it being interruppeded all the time.

Anyway when you are installing and it asks if you would like to test the computer to see if its capable DON'T! and just click no to testing and install anyway (you know your machine can run it anyway... if it can run xp it can run GK1!)

That should do it... Most of those all sierra games seem to work with this little trick on XP... But if you still find it not working the way you wanted or at all you could run an older version of windows through a virtual machine, i.e. Microsoft virtual PC or VMware... Seems like overkill but its a mint way to run all your older games without as many issues.

this little trick may be fine and all but in the long run is a pain in the butt everytime you install and uninstall the game. it takes too long. i own the game and have found a patch that will install it on XP no problems. no need for boosting anything. also i have GK2 running on XP the same way with a little added bonus of all 6 cd's converted to 1 DVD

You can also install a DOS emulator like Dos box (google this).
I loved this game!!!!

That patch worked perfectly! Now, I am about to download the patch for the second Gabriel Knight game.

Thanks so much for posting!

It runs much better in DOSBox as opposed to using Endroz's XP installer. Run it using the latest version of DOSBox (.70) with core set to normal and the cycles at 10000 and everything should be fine.

I'm playing it right now on Windows 7 x64 with DOSBox.

There's also an already fixed up version available on gog.com.

It uses DOSBox as well, but requires no effort on the user's part. Just click install, wait for it to finish and play.

The game didn't loose anything over the years. It's as awesome as I remembered it.
