You can't blame the school, but the principal was whacked

My mother is an educator and yes they encourage their students to do well, but the principal went over the top. Angela (having Borderline Personality Disorder,) in my opinion, wanted to be accepted because she had no concept of who she was or any goals other than making stacy want to be her friend.

My question is, Angela is supposed to be this sweet angel, yet she longs to be friends with someone who put people down and is outright cruel. I don't get it. Yes, I understand wanting popularity, but the rest of the girls liked her too. Why did she care so much about Stacy.

And why was angela afraid of a joint? Maybe they would have hit it off better if angela had taken a toke.

reply

Stacy was the Queen Bee and everyone followed her lead. When she decided to be mean to Angela due to Angela defending Monica on the school trip, the other girls followed without question. Angela knew if Stacy went against her, all the other girls would too.

She was probably disturbed by the joint due to her sheltered upbringing. Her parents seemed to be very religious.

reply

I thought she didn't want to take it because it had already been in someone else's mouth and she didn't want germs. :/

Okay Stacy wasn’t the nicest person in school but she has got her own rights. She does not want to be friend with Angela. That’s all. Angela could have live her own life, but she come to Stacy, tell her she’s pretty, funny and confidence and then killed her too. What’s wrong with her?

Come on! Angela, there are people who
1) Like you and want to be your friend
2) Don’t like you but can be your friend
3) Like you but don’t want to be your friend
4) Don’t like you and don’t want to be your friend

Stacy happen to be someone who does not like you and does not want to be your friend. So, get over it and find new friends. What right does she has to kill Stacy?

The real Stacy wasn't like that in real life in the move lifetime portrayed.

This is from an article in Rolling Stones magazine published in 1985:

Costas WAS a really "mean" girl. One of her friends, Stacey Bennett, "kept remembering the cute things Kirsten did":

"One thing that was just so much like her" went back to the winter of their sophomore year when Stacey invited Kirsten to spend Ski Week with her family at Lake Tahoe. "We had four girls in our cabin", Stacey recalled. "And there was this one that we all didn't like. My Mom had invited her because she invited me to this thing of her before." The lonely girl brought a diary. "She would look at us and write something and it was totally bugging us", Stacey remembered. "So finally she goes to take a shower and puts the book down on the table. Kirsten looks at me and starts laughing, and I started laughing and we opened it and started reading. Every time she'd take a shower we'd read it, then put it back in the same place, and she never knew. We would like, repeat what she had written about us and it was SO funny."

"She was only mean to people she didn't care about," said Kirsten's friend Liesl Palmer.

I feel like whether Kirsten was nice or not didnt make a difference the real life Angela had a big inferiority complex and I think she just focused all her rage and blame on Kirsten. I also believe she made up all that stuff about the marijuana, she said something that scared Kirsten enough to try to get away from her and I dont think we'll ever know what exactly.

I do agree with you that something was said or done in the car that freaked Kirsten out to the point of knocking on a strangers door to call her parents to pick her up.
I also believed Bernadette lied about the house party, due to her wearing sweat pants and a t-shirt that night...I am the same age as Bernadette and Kirsten (born in 1968) and high school life in those days was so materialistic...it would have been social suicide to walk into a house party in sweat pants!
I do feel Bernadette intended to kill her that night.

I believe she wanted to try one last attempt for Kirsten's friendship by having this list of compliments to say to her like --> I admire you, you are so pretty ,etc... and it backfired on her.
Back in the 1980s, If someone said those things to me I would have thought she was in love with me or something. And I think Kirsten felt that way and wanted out.
Bernadette knew Kirsten would have a field day about the incident and she had to get rid of the threat.

It happens a lot. Movies that are based on books and real life events often have the tendency to change a lot. So, it isn't the first time something like that happens:)

Just out of curiosity, what was the real stacy like?

Being in the Social Work field I would say that Angela/ Bernadette was not a calculating murderer,or narcissist and didn't suffer from Anti Social Personality disorders. I truly believe she suffered from Borderline Personality Disorder. BPD can cause people to see things in black and white. That why Angela became a mess when she didn't make the yearbook staff or cheerleading. You're right. She already had close friends and didn't need a ton of extra curricular activities.

BPD will also cause people to have no sense of self identity. They essentially don't know who they are, so they will take on the personalities of the people around them. I believe Angela truly wanted to be Stacy. In the movie we don't see Angela self harming, but I have a feeling she probably did self harm. Also, BPD causes people to act irrationally and do things on a whim. Do I think she planned to kill Stacy, not at all, but she wanted so badly for everything to turn out the way she had portrayed it in her mind, that she lashed out at the only person she could hurt.

The one thing I really don't understand is why the good Samaritan who took Stacy home, didn't walk her to the door and stay with her, when he could clearly see a car following them, and he saw Angela exit the car and run after Stacy. Also, it's been said that the good Samaritan didn't check on Stacy and instead spent his time chasing down the car. Had he gotten out of his car and stayed with Stacy, she'd probably be alive.

I went to Miramonte, the real high school the movie was based on, and I think in the movie they used the prinicipal to convey the attitude of a lot of the parents in the Orinda community, the hyper-importance of achievement.

The principal was a creepy pervert.
