ok so chuckie is a knight which fresh sacrificed (remember his father said"you like that horse and it's crazy moves"and chuckie says "i bust those dumb moves"Fresh's sister was his queen(remember his father says everytime i threaten your queen you move her back"corkey ,estoban ,red and jake were all pawns ...so fresh did the opposite of what his dad said he sacrificed his king(dad) to protect his queen(his sister)that's why he's crying at the end

reply

My vote for queen is Fresh's cheerleader love interest who dies on the basketball court. (c'mon, Fresh is the King already) Dad lectures him about protecting his queen in chess in the very next scene after Fresh watches the girl die. Fresh is visibly moved by his father's words and refocuses to challenge his dad for the game and sets off to pursue his sister's menacing lover, who I assert as the opposing King. Along the way to capturing the King, he sees Jake chain whipped, brutal vengeance for killing Fresh's queen. He also loses Chuckie to Esteban's soldiers, which aligns well with his dad's advice. The con he works on Esteban to make Esteban kill Fresh's sister's other lover...now that's good chess play. James is an extra...totally innocent guy, except for having fun with a drug kingpin's lady. James is a convenient decoy for Fresh to finger as Esteban's competition. I hope nobody actually had to live this story. Fresh is gutsy and gets underestimated again and again.

Chuckie wasn't a Knight, Chuckie was Pawn.

I am a lioness. I will not cringe for them.

oh fresh killed the dog the way he did because a)once the dog tasted blood in a fight fresh realized that there was no going back kinda of like how once fresh put his plan in to action there was no going back b)he hung the dog and shot him just to make sure the dog would die as quick as possible....in my opinion

Did he HAVE to hang the dog?

I mean, I understand him having to "put it out of its misery", but was it necessary to string it up by it's collar and shoot it while it was dangling?

I think Esteban was the king on the chessboard. Right after he takes Esteban down, the next scene is of Fresh knocking over the king on the chessboard...game over.

His dad was his mentor, the only man he could trust, the only one who was completely outside of everything that Fresh was involved with. I doubt any of Estaban's or Corky's people even knew Fresh had a dad.

reply

Naw, Chuckie was just a DUMBASS!

in the movie estaban mentions to fresh that his sister went downtown to the va clinic to see there dad and he wasn't there ....so estaban most certainly knew of fresh's dad ...and after fresh turned on everyone he only protected his sister and himself so i'm quite sure that he would go after fresh's dad,and even though fresh didn't want to hurt his dad he sacrificed him to save fresh and his sister that's why he was crying at the end.....just my opinion is all

I forgot about Fresh doing that with Nicky and his dad! Thanks for the reminder. Out of curiosity I got the DVD out again and watched the scene near the end of the movie.

Esteban says that Nicky said Fresh told her "your father wanted to see her at the rehab center in Staten Island...like an emergency, right? And she go all the way out there and he's not checked in there no more, is that true?"
Fresh denies it and Nicky asks why Michael is lying.

To me, that means no one except Fresh really knows where the father is. It doesn't sound like Esteban knew anything about their dad until Nicky told him about going to visit him. He's almost homeless anyway, living in that ratted out trailer, I don't think anyone really knows where he is.

And Fresh is so smart and works so hard at setting things up to save his sister and himself and to destroy his enemies, if he really thought his father was in danger of getting murdered by those enemies he would've cut some kind of deal for him, too.

And I think that Esteban making an effort to take out Fresh's dad from behind bars would be a waste of time, money and effort. I think Esteban is totally out of business anyway. Someone else is going to move in on his territory in no time. It didn't seem like he had any gang or mob connections, he and Corky seemed like independents, so no one is going to look out for him. I think Esteban's on his own now and is just another convict.

Also, as far as the story structure, I think the fact that the scene when Fresh cries happens at the end of the movie means it is meant to have a deeper meaning than just that he feels bad that his dad might get killed.

Fresh holds back a lot from people. I don't think anyone except his cousins and his father knew he played chess, for example. No one knows what's going on in his head.

I think he's crying because he has to go into the Witness Protection Program and knows he'll never see his dad again. Simple as that.

reply

The queen was Fresh's sister, but he used Esteban's obsession with the queen, again that's Nicky, to win and take out all his pawns, and eventually Estoban, the King, himself.

reply

The crying is because he's finally made it to the end and beat his opponent. Now all the seriousness of the chess/life game he was playing can be let go. And the culmination of all the seriousness is finally let out. It shows that he is both a kid and that he not the serious coldheart that he had to portray for his "game."

reply

Yes.

i agree with nunquam

reply

I thought that his crying at the end was to remind us that this is really just a little kid that has just seen and been through all these crazy things.

reply

I agree, his crying was an emotional release after all that he had been through. I didn't get the impression that his dad would be murdered at all. The ordeal was over, and his crying was just a long awaited sigh, kind of like---whew, it's over!

reply

I completely agree. He is still a kid that needs to let it out.

reply

yeah, same deal. Throughout his whole ordeal he was just calm and cool. Nothing seemed to phase him. His crying at the end, to me, was all that bottled up emotion bubbling over.

i thought he was crying because he was hearing his dad talk trash to him before the game and he knew those kinds of moments wouldn't exist anymore. He would never see his father again. His dad was the only person in his life that he really could talk to or share anything with, whether it is a game of chess or a descussion of life. It's really sad.

Exactly.

~I'm super! Thanks for asking!~

reply

Agreed. He may have been a tough kid, but he can't change the fact that he had to commit terrible acts in order to get what he wanted. To me, he was crying for what little innocence remained in him and that he will never see again.

Fresh , cried at the end for the fact that he knew his dad might be retaliated against .There is obviously danger or Fresh and Nikki wouldn't have to go into witness protection .Personally I think knew his dad would be the final sacrifice.I could be wrong though.

reply

Na. How would anybody know what his dad look like. Estoban don't know. Estoban's shooters defintly don't know. Fresh dad just anotha one of da hundreds homeless ex-junkies. U don't understand dat in dat community u can know about somebody parents being a junky but dat don't mean u know em when u see em. Fresh is cryin cuz look at all da sh!t dat *beep* went thru. He lost everyone close to him. And that mite be the last time he see his father. The movie being played like a chess game is accurate. But Fresh and his Dad aren't on the board.

-THIS WEED IS FANTASTIC!

reply

you are correct. Fresh and his father are not on the board. they are the controllers, they use the pieces to do their bidding. if you watch the film with commentary on, you hear the director/WRITER say that Fresh cries at the end because it is the last time he will see his father, and that his hard shell of a mask finally cracks now that his demons have been destroyed. he can finally pour out the emotion from everything he has been through. tougher than nails or not, he is still 12 years old. and the very last minute of the film is the perfect moment for this display.
