I don't mind that it won best picture but I can understand people preferring Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption.
shareI have no issues with FG taking the oscar but PF and TSR are both great movies. Any of these films could have won it.
Hard to say which movie I prefer, but I probably like FG the most simply because it is an impressive story and original enough to feel as though it brought something new to the genre (comedy/drama). While TSR and PF are very similar to other movies, especially Shawshank. It's almost like they took a bunch of ideas from other prison films and threw them into this movie. It's very well made though...
But PF had some really fresh ideas. It's quite good...
Forrest Gump definitely deserved the win. Pulp Fiction was fantastic and might have won if it didn't come out the same year as FG. I never saw The Shawshank Redemption but I did hear it was a great movie but, like Pulp Fiction, it was up against Forrest Gump which was high above all the others.

shareJust saw it. You're right, it was excellent. I'm still of the opinion FG deserved the award, but without a doubt if TSR had come out in a different year, it would have won.

It's a tough choice for me but I think I would go with FG as well, simply because it's quite a story. And while TSR is great, it still has things in we've seen in other prison films. And even though Morgan Freeman got the Oscar nomination, I didn't think anyone really deserved an Oscar. Morgan's Oscar nod was probably just a shoutout for his excellent narration.
If anything, the acting might be the weakest part of the film. But, its still a highly entertaining movie.
I've never been that impressed with Tim Robbins though. However, he was excellent in Mystic River, which is another movie I would recommend.
I saw Mystic River a long time ago and loved it.
Morgan Freeman always deserves the Oscar IMO, he's one of a kind (yes, it probably was his narration that clinched the nomination).
Yep, I think MR is one of the best crime dramas ever. Great film....
I wouldn't have been upset if Freeman took the Oscar but Hanks (the winner) was quite good.
I don't follow the Oscars closely so I didn't know that Shawshank and Forrest Gump were competing. It would've been a difficult choice for me if I was a voter!
shareIt's kind of odd how many people have never heard of Shawshank. I bring it up to new friends and acquaintances occasionally and most of the time, they've never heard of it. Seems like it got drowned out by FG.
Surprisingly, it didn't do that well at the box office either.
