So did Forrest and Lieutenant Dan not see each other for like years?

When Forrest and Dan see each other at the wedding, Forrest is stunned and thrilled to see him. And he sees Dan's new legs for the first time. So had it been like years and years since they'd seen each other? I'm surprised since Forrest loved Lieutenant Dan so much, I'd have thought he'd want to keep in touch.
