If Barney was vice president

I wonder how the film might have card differently if Barney would have taken the Vice President position instead of Fred.

Then the plot wouldn't have been set into motion, though its puzzling - Why get the guy who scored the highest when you would rather have the guy who scored the lowest as that would decrease the risk of them finding out Cliff's scheme?

reply

I always figured the same thing.

Surely it would have made more sense for Cliff to simply announce that he was going to give the job to the employee with the highest score and then switch papers and instead promote one of the employees with the lowest scores. Of course, in that scenario, the film wouldn't need to add the contrivance of Barney switching papers, or if it did, it would ironically end up with him (i.e. the employee who actually got the highest score) ending up Vice President. Alternatively, perhaps the film should just have shown Barney check Fred's papers, but decide not to cheat and swap papers for his best friend's benefit, so that when Fred is made Vice President, he'd be the first to figure that something was up.

reply

Agreed. The swapping of papers should never have taken place.

The fake VP position should have been chosen based on the dumbest employee with the LOWEST score on the test.

And being Fred's best friend, Barney decided to keep his mouth shut despite knowing that Fred had done poorly on the test.

That would have been a better plot. Too bad the writers chose a less logical plot in the film.

I think it would have been the same outcome just different couples, I think Fred and Wilma would have become resentful of Betty's and Barney's new fortune.
