Not Nearly As Bad As People Say

I remember the big firestorm of negativity when this movie first came out. I don't get it. This movie is easily more entertaining than at least 70% of the movies put out by Hollywood in the last 12 months. It was cute with an edge. If anything, it was more honest about sexuality and lack of morals than most films.

Sure it had the required cornball Hollywood ending with Rosie getting the guy, but overall was amusing.

I agree. It treats potentially offensive material in a very casual manner and the tone of it reminds me of other light-hearted Gary Marshall fare. It is a “sex comedy,” but its handling of the subject matter is more open and mature than other films in the genre. It won’t win any awards, but it does provide a pleasant and amusing way to spend an evening. I like it.

Me too. It turned a hard-core porn novel (oo, I can hear the teeth grinding out there now) into something actually fun and watchable.

I remember not liking this when it came out but I just re-watched it last night and I enjoyed it. I thought Rosie was funny in it.

This movie's okay. I didn't expect much and that's what I got with a few giggles.

Can we get stuffed crust?

I recently watched it again and it's such a treat to watch. A nice mix of sexy and romance, fun and funny. I wish they could re-release it on DVD - it's so hard and pricy to find. :\

This movie may not be everyone's cup of tea, but as far as romantic comedies go, it's at least above average. I think that a big reason for the negativity is the fact that this movie came out in 1994, when sexual domination and S&M were such taboo subjects. People hated the movie because it offended their sensibilities. I think that most viewers would have a much tamer reaction if this movie were made today.

Of course, the movie is a bit of a strange hybrid. There is a lot of nudity and sexual content for a romantic comedy. I can imagine that a lot of people who watch Exit to Eden for the former aspect aren't going to be wild about the latter. And vice versa.

I agree 100%. This film didn't seem to know what genre it wanted to belong to. It was all over the place.

As for the movie itself, its not great but I find it to be a guilty pleasure.
I think Dana Delany was quite miscast here, she almost ruins the role. Her character was all over the place as well.
But I still like the film. I too wish it would be re-released on DVD. The cheapest copy I saw was around $40!
I actually ordered it on VHS for a song, since I still have a VCR.

"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

It did have someone visually going down upon a woman. That was pretty edgy for mainstream movies back then. Most every other instance was implied but this was a no-doubt thing. It did raise the intensity level a bit FWIW!
