Really? I found it utterly flat and uninteresting..

I love this film as well and can't wait until the day when it is released right. I'm surprised to find that this film isn't known very well. I even ordered it on DVD from overseas (I live in America and ordered the most widely available copy). Apparently it was released in Japan on DVD but have not seen that copy and it is rather expensive if it is even still in print. YesAsia used to have it. If I knew that it was a better print I would buy it in a heartbeat. This one is in dire need of a rediscovery. A British or American disc would be preferable as it would reach a lot more people IMHO. Arrow maybe. Maybe Criterion. ha... fat chance. But I can dream.

Yeah the thing is amazingly shot - atmospheric, evocative and genuinely creepy. Impeccable shot selection and camerawork; lots of different cinematic techniques are put to use throughout, but it never feels overbearing or gratuitously show-off`y. The second half of the film gets a bit muddled and confusing, with excessive emphasis on psychobabble and sort of obscure past events, but it still gets a 8/10 rating from me. A chiller very effectively put across.
