PG Rating?

The only reason I bring this up is that I showed this to my 8th grade students as a reward for hard work after a teaching unit on waves. There is footage, taken at a beach in France, that shows topless girls. I had seen this before but, since it is so brief, I forgot about it. Imagine the reaction by 8th graders when this footage came up for the first time in class. I had to play it off like I didn't know what they were murmuring about and scrambled to get the DVD box to recheck the rating...it says right on the box...PG! I still show this film but have to click the DVD player forward a bit thru that one scene. The rating might really be considered PG-13. Just a forewarning for those showing this film to young children, those that are sensitive to this sort of thing, or other teachers in my position.

I first watched this movie in a Physical Education class (7th Grade, 12 years old) when it was too rainy to play basketball. The topless in France scene showed up, but it wasn't really a big deal. We've all seen breasts before, and the movie was rated PG. It's hard to remember that this obsession with breasts is mainly a cultural thing; men are completely OK'ed by many societies to go around topless to their hearts content.

Over here in england its rated G.
Whats the big deal about boobs anyway
They're in the distance and they're not touched or played with or anything? Everyones going to see them at some point in their life anyway.

What is happening to the world? If you can't show this movie to 8th graders, because of one scene with topless girls, then there is definately something wrong.

You have to remember that this movie is a documentary and women in France go to the beach topless. The scene was not done in an ugly or perverse way. Kids are always going to snicker. I would have just explained that it's part of several countries culture to go to the beach naked.

Boobs! Jesus turn it off immediately! Thanks Jesus. Wow man those kids are going to be disturbed for the rest of their days. Now they've seen them once they'll just want to see them again and again for the rest of their GOD DAMN lives and you know that's just where it starts man. Next thing you know they'll be playing... with their PENISES! It's worse than any drug man. Those bloody French corrupting the 8th graders all around the world. We should start a war with them immediately finish them off then make a war movie about it showing the joys and wonders of war! VIOLENCE RULES!

Christ! We were all breast fed so what's the problem? Its not like they were titty porking the girls in the movie. Americans take nudity waaaay to seriously.

reply

geez, they're what? 14? If you can't watch this film at any age, you should give up on life. There is nothing wrong with the scene you speak of.

I can't believe that people get their panties in such a twist over nudity here in America. What blows my mind is how we can show students films about war and violence, films that show people getting ground to chum, but God forbid there be any nudity or even the slightest reference to sex. Now I like war movies but seriously would you rather have young minds educated in ways to destroy the human body or educate them that the human body is a natural and fascinating thing?
