What's so great about this movie? Its not that funny, in my opinion?

I mean, I never understood the hype about this movie. I seen it like 2 times, & I didn't like that much the 2nd time around either.

Can someone explain to me how this movie is so funny & how is it praised so much. I don't get it? People say that this is Jim Carrey's best comedy, But I seriously think its his worst. Is it supposed to be funny that they are both retarded & always messing stuff up? Sorry, but Pink Panther did it better.

Anyways, Jim has WAY BETTER comedies than D&D. Like the Mask, Ace Ventura 1 & 2, Me, Myself & Irene. But best comedy is Liar Liar, in my opinion.

Why is Jim always getting put against his free-will in movies? Liar Liar, he was forced not to lie. In Yes Man, he was fored to say Yes to everything. In Me,Myself & Irene, his 2nd personality was just forcing him to do crazy sh*t against his will. Whats up with that?

Must just be your sense of humour, I think it is his best. Only one of his I can't stand is The Mask.

Please explain why u think D&D is the best, if u dont mind. I just hate when people make claims, but don't explain why. Thats just dumb to me. It means nothing. Whats the point of making a point if you don't back it up?

I don't think people can make much sense of why they find one thing funnier than something else, sometimes something just tickles your funnybone and you can't put your finger on why exactly.

Nor should you feel compelled to :) explaining why something is funny, to someone who doesn't get it, just never works ;)

Even though I'm with OP about this particular movie, that is true. This is exactly how I would describe my feelings for Seth Roger and Danny McBride: it's not that they are comedy geniuses, but there is something about them that works with me.

Nah, I don't find him that funny. I don't hate him, but I don't seek to see him on screen. I don't do it with Rogen nor McBride neither, but enjoy their presence on screen.

And no, that is not it. There many comedies with Jim Carrey I love: Ace Ventura 1 and 2, Liar Liar, Me, Myself and Irene, The Mask and I even enjoyed Bruce Almighty. Simply this one never really worked for me, that's all.

But how could I explain why this movie is funny to me, when it isn't funny to you? I'm not gonna change your mind about it.
I see this and I find it hilarious, you don't. I don't know what else is there to explain...

Well the jokes in the movie for the majority are very simple, it's not like they are difficult to 'get' or anything and you need repeated viewing or something. You either find them funny or you don't.

From memory I think Roger Ebert thought it was very average but the one bit he couldn't stop laughing at was the bit where the bird had had its head taped back on and sold to a blind kid. Strangely enough whilst I don't mind that bit I don't really don't particularly find it that funny. It's just personal taste and you can't really explain it.

Ace Ventura 2 is a guilty pleasure. If u didn't laugh or smile at the projector scene, then u have no soul.

Yes, well we aren't fans of this movie because we are convinced of its cancer-fighting properties or that it cures world hunger.

We think it's stupid, but it's our kind of stupid.

If you don't laugh when Mr. Mentalino collapses and Lloyd points and laughs then attempts CPR, there's nothing we can do for you.

All I can say when it comes to your movie tastes, is to quote the great Lloyd Christmas, from that scene...

"Out with the bad and in with good, out with the bad and in with the..."

Looks like you must have JUST missed the Shaggin' Wagon, Billy_Rambo! Too bad, man, because those of us who caught it for some reason no longer have control, and every viewing of Dumb and dumber somehow results in hysterical laughter and ridiculous non stop quoting of every line, even down to saying "I'm not seeing it here, Lloyd" everytime someone can't find something!!

Ironically, I had JUST believed I escaped this trap, too and then, they made Dumb and Dumber To, which TRACTER BEAM....ZZZZZRRRRRR...Sucked me right in..... ;)

Oh I travel, a sort of licenced troubleshooter.

Liar Liar is CLASSIC Jim Carrey. One of his best.

I would say Ace Ventura and Liar Liar are ahead of Dumb and Dumber. I honestly think people talk up Dumb and Dumber because it was such a hit at the box office. But it was during a period where Jim Carrey's movies were making so much money, and Dumb and Dumber caught on to the wave.

When people talk about sequel to Dumb and Dumber, I actually tend to think they talk up the original better then it was.

I'm a Jim Carrey fan. I just wanted to see it before buying it, even if it was only $5. definitely not the reason I didn't give it a chance.

I found Se7en in the $5 bargain bin at Walmart a few years ago.

Just goes to show that the price does not reflect the quality.

It's generally quite a funny film - just the way they act and the stuff they say "I like it, I like it a lot!" is just too silly not to be funny. It all depends on your humour.

I think Ace Ventura 2 is my favourite Jim Carrey film, though.

For the most part, it has most to do with what you find funny.

But if I try to explain why its funny for me, I will go with the fact that the characters in themselves are innocent. They say dumb things and do dumb things not because they are trying to be stupid. But because they truly don't know any better. And its not like slapstick, fall on your face type of jokes. Its more like, guy uses google sidebar search engine to search for google website so that they can use the google search engine. Just not very bright.

Which is why dumb and dumber 2 failed. Because they tried too much slapstick humor. And they did not stay true to who they were.

But in the first one, Harry and Lloyd don't think clearly. They come off as mean sometimes but they don't do it intentionally, at least not to others (for the most part).

I mean they end up killing a guy when all they were trying to do is a simple joke lol.

Its a great movie. I've seen it probably over 100 times and still don't get tired of it.
