What was the meaning of the dream about the circus and the first wife?

He kept seeing clowns and his first wife. I thought maybe this meant his whole life was a dream and he really was a psycho.

But at the end it was obvious it was all real. Right?

I think this was Rays subconscious talking to him, but he wasn't listening

He was telling himself in his mind and his dreams what a sucker he has been because of his new manipulative wife. The "Dreamgirl" exhibit and the clown warned him of the reality of his situation. To him, his true love has always been his first wife and he regrets the divorce. He wants to apologize to her and renew their relationship. That's why he's dancing with her. She's his dream lover.
