Why the injured detective-did I miss something?

I've seen this quite a few times and wondered if I'm watching a edited version.
The detective is walking with a stick and seems to have a cast on his foot. Was he supposedly injured by Johnny at some point? Surely if he had such a problem he wouldn't be on duty anyway.

I've read quite a few reviews and no-one seems to mention it. It's just got me curious.
