It's not a question of IF
Rather it is a question of WHEN

Sounds like it cut off a little early on you.

After she gives dad the key, we see her drive away. Next, she's unpacking in her new apartment. She's on the phone, leaving a message for Mark - something about their dinner plans, and then they'll paint her apartment. She hangs up the phone, and looks around her new place. She hangs a new curtain on the window. The end.

So.....basically, her dad disowned her, like her brother, because she dishonoured him by moving out of his house, and not into a marital home.

She decided her own happiness was more important than pleasing her parents. She didn't want to marry some random Chinese guy. She wanted to pursue her acting, and be with Mark, and so that's what she did.

The brief conversation she has at the end of the movie with her mother, just before she moves out, gives us a glimmer of hope that maybe dad will come around eventually - but at the very least, she and mom will be okay.

To me, what's actually printed on the curtain is the most important part of the scene. Earlier in the movie Jade was being teased by the older women about wanting to be an actress, teasing her about being the "next Marilyn Monroe". The curtain she puts up in the final scene is covered with Marilyn Monroe. She's following her dream and to hell with what anyone else thinks. A perfect way to end the movie.

I never noticed that tfhike. I wonder if that was on purpose, or just a coincidence...very cool you made the connection either way.

She moves out and her father severs their relationship, like he did with that of his son.

Traditionally, she should have remained in her parent's house until marriage, which is why they kept setting her up on dates. But she decides she simply needs to move out and be her own person. This is unacceptable to her father. Her brother had already been disowned for some reason we're not told. But we do know he married a girl who did not speak chinese, which upset their mother.

Anyways, the material being cut is a window covering at her new apartment. She's cutting a curtain-like thing to shade the window while leaving a message for her boyfriend, who she won't have to sneak around with anymore. I think the cutting of the material is symbolic of cutting ties between her family and setting out on her own.

She could'nt beleive what her own father said, so she said " But Dad...." ( I am still your daughter ) And then cut to her own apartment where she cut cloth to make curtains.

I was her father ( Dad Li ) in this movie. Hope that answers you.
