WHY ONLY 5.8?

reading the posts/comments I found that a lot of people enjoyed this movie, so why only 5.8?

I saw this movie and consider it as very decent, my rate was 8

Thank you for replying!

I'd agree with most of Murphy's post. 5.8 is also above average (and almost 6), so it's not that unrealistic. If I had to vote, I'd say 6.5-7. This was definitely one of the best Crichton adaptations, imho, as not a whole lot (especially critical core elements) were changed at all.

I'll give two reasons for the rating not being as high (I'm sure there are loads more though):

1. This is a superficial reason, but as I watched it on Showtime tonight, the low quality of the film kept catching my eye. A similar quality to an 80s television show (not a 1994 movie). Idk, maybe it was just me (or Showtime).

2. This made for a better read than a movie. Having read the book this summer (and loved it), I was clued in and knew the story. If you think about it, there is a lot going on and people can get easily confused (as the numerous posts on this board can show). There are probably a fair number of voters who gave it low marks because it went over their heads. While watching it, it also felt a little rushed, too, but again, this is coming from someone who read the book.

Just my thoughts.

No.
A rating of 5,8 is tremendously low for Disclosure. Good the efforts to conceive and forecast new technologies, rising those years. Maybe photography and little acting are below expectations, the sex elements probably work negatively for a high vote, but the plot is unique and thrilling. The eternal battle between sexes, here, is dealt with consciousness, not widely in behalf of a part but in balance for both. A 6,6-6,8 final vote would fit for it.

I just recently got on IMDB and enjoy it very much. The summarys are almost always well thought out and objective. Ive been on for a month and the most glaring error is the rating system, Disclosure is a smart, sexy, cool flick with superb performances from almost every character, and reversal of roles of men and women that is more than refreshing, knowing this, and having seen the film many times before i read the review i thought the absolute lowest wouldve been 7.0. I believe that closed minded womens lib folks and and people that found the sex scene vulgar and couldnt see any further than that are the reason why the rating is obviously skewed.

I loved that movie ,I feel it is very underrated too ,I think all Micheal Crichton's wrtings are very good ,Barry Levinson too is a tactful director .

I usually check this site before watching a movie. I have my own system i use that has worked well. i divide the number of highest ratings (I use 9)by the lowest (i use 2 here). it didnt really rate high on this scale at all(1.56) a couple of my favorites for comparison facing the giants (6.36) and october sky (27.48) so i wasn't expecting much from disclosure. i like douglas in movies past so figured i'd still give it a shot. to my surprise even my system failed miserly rating this movie. can't figure it.

and reversal of roles of men and women that is more than refreshing

Hello patriotsfan401,

could you please explain to me, why and how you found the "reversal of roles" more than refreshing.

I find this an interesting observation/interpretation of the plot. I'm writing a thesis at the moment that features an analysis of "Disclosure" amongst other films.

Maybe I'll start a new thread to get into the gender-aspects of "Disclosure" a bit more indepth. Would anyone else be interested to discuss this matter?

Greetings,
Stefan
P.S. sorry about any language mistakes... english isn't my mother tongue.

I was also surprised at the low 5.8 rating. I would give it an 8 or 7.5+ for sure, just for pure entertainment factor. This movie is bursting with atmosphere and interesting twists!

Hi,

For tafnes, I'm really interested in discussing gender based roles and stereotypes on movies. That's the principal lecture I use to do when I first watch a movie.

The truth is, this movie is ONE story, not necessarily a reflection of reality; it's a reminder that sexual harassment can occur in a sexual direction that maybe society may not consider (woman harassing man). I remember a lot of people complaining about Fatal Attraction because it presented a woman going mad about a man, and thought it was completely machist.

I remember that, the Day of the Women in Spain, when a lot of feminist groups went to the street to complain about machist violence in Spain, the public TV channel played this movie, as a "reminder" that sexual harassment does not understand of machism nor feminism, and that it has to be legally considered in all of his ways.

I agree, though I consider the public services (directed by the conservative party when this happened) did have a bit of bad taste showing the movie that day :S

Disclosure has a lot of gender studies message, it was fresh and new in that way, but was it really trying to give a message, or did it just switch the common way of harassment to a "new" one, to make easy money? If gender is a social construction, I agree the fact that any woman can use her power to take a man to bed. But just "switching" the male-female typical roles is not a really creative technique, in my opinion, and do not give a really strong message.

Nowadays' reality is another. I dream with a world without harassment, but if I had to accept harassment, I'd prefer to do it in a non-machist way. The truth is, it's not possible yet. When a man abuses of his power, it's still with machist prejudices in his mind. When a woman does, it's not the same, she may be aware of his power as a professional, but she does not have any other kind of power, society has not given women this, yet. This movie presents more a "what if" plot than a reflection of reality.

We want to change society, but to do it, we have to analyse how is society, in which point it is now, and this movie does not. Everybody insulted Fatal Attraction for showing a woman that went crazy for a man. But, did FA pretend that women were like Alex Forrest? That they ARE like that? Or that society give women this dependence, this willing to get married? Maybe we have to be aware of what society pretends us to be (blue for men, pink for women), be able to difference between sexual difference as an opposite to genderbased difference, and then try to change things.

Disclosure had an interesting plot, though the movie was not so good for me. Maybe I'll give a try to the book, that looks more attractive as much of you point.

I think that because the movie is entertaining, it rates UP to a 5.8. I've always considered this to be a bunch of garbage. You can say what you want about it's entertainment value, or how hot Demi is, or any other quality. What blurts out to me is that you basically have professional, supposedly responsible adults acting like chilren. I realize that a lot of what went on in the movie definately goes on in real life. However, when I watch a movie or TV, I want to escape from life's problems, NOT be reminded of them. That's just my opinion on why the movie was rated so low. The plot is rather irritating.

What is a 5.8, anyway? To me, a rating of "5" can mean:
a) very disappointing considering the talent and/or hype
b) a movie that's so bad it's entertaining
c) simply boring and/or uninteresting

There are IMDB voters who might think a "5" means the movie is a complete failure, while others might think a "5" means the movie is simply average. Besides, only 11,000 have voted on this movie.

I would've thought Disclosure would score around the "6-7" range, but I think these scores are more of a guideline than the gospel truth.

When I rate movies I go by quality of acting, script, cinematography etc...
But there's also the fact of longevity.

If I don't want to watch a movie more than 1 or 2 times then I usually rate it a bit lower. The more I want to watch a movie with repeat viewing the more it stands out for me.

I watched this film recently and gave it a 6. To me a 6 is a solid piece of work and one that I kept in my collection. But it's all in the eye of the beholder anyways.

Someone mentioned this site as a guideline and not the definitive say on movies as a whole. I couldn't agree more.
