What is the fascination with this movie???

This movie is the essence of corny, more importantly, it had no dominant story line and an inconclusive ending. Sorely disappointing. Why do people like it so much?

reply

I liked it for various reasons: very likable lead character, funny odd-ball sidekick character (Gnaghi), nice Italian setting and nicely filmed, quirky dialogue with lots of black humor and twisted mentality, interesting macabre poetry being recited here and there, somewhat confusing story with an inconclusive ending which made me THINK and PONDER what the hell I was watching, great-looking female part in the movie (especially when she was nude), horror and splatter that was done "tastefully," i.e. not so over-the-top that it was just non-stop sensationalism, like so many of your usual blood-bath zombie splatter movies....

I don't know, I wasn't "fascinated" with it, but I just liked the look and feel of the movie, the ambience, et al. Hard to pin down just one reason, but I liked it from a 'total package' point of view. Not for everybody, to be sure, but also I'm sure you'll agree that tastes differ among people, so surely you can allow that many people liked it.

You make a good point Eric-1226. You are right, it is not an ordinary zombie movie, I guess that is why it did not sit well with me. I was expecting to see all the over-the-top blood and gore which is characteristic of this genre and forgot about the humor behind it. Thanks for commenting.
Have you seen Dead Alive? It is very similar to this film in style (with what I see in the trailer)and it also has high ratings.

reply

I don't believe I've seen Dead Alive, are you referring to this movie (also known as Braindead)?:

No, I have not seen that movie yet, but thanks for directing my attention to it, it looks really good and I definitely plan to look for it. Thanks!

reply

Yes, that is the one! Let me know what you think of it if you get a chance to watch it. It looks funny and people rave about it. Nice talking to you.

reply

Dead Alive is amazing. It hilarious while being over the top. It's quite possibly one of the bloodiest films I have ever seen next to Riki-Oh.

reply

Thats great to hear, thanks for letting me know. I will be getting it in the mail this week, cant wait to see it. Can you recommend another one for me? Which is your favorite zombie movie?

I'm not into zombie films at all but I liked this one because it was more like a black comedy. As Eric said, the dialogue are funny and I like the twisted mentality. I also loved the intelligent references to art history and other films. I've seen both versions of Dellamorte Dellamore, the shorter, "new edition" and the so-called uncut German version. There's more gore in the latter (which I can do without) but also an important scene at the end that is unfortunately missing in the new edition.

Very, VERY old thread. Just rewatched this favorite movie of mine and came to this message board to find out what you other IMDb-users thought about it.

I just replied to another thread and I wrote (though not as elaborated or eloquently as you) almost the same response. I absolutely agree with all your points why this is a great movie!

bab73, try these films:
- Lucio Fulci's Zombie
- Lucio Fulci's The Beyond (L'Aladila - E tu vivrai nel terrore)
- Night of the Living Dead ('68 & '90)
- Dawn of the Dead (1978)
- Day of the Dead (1985)
- H.P. Lovecraft's Re-Animator (1985)
- The Evil Dead
- Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn
- Army of Darkness

bab73, I'm completely with you on this one. I've tried to watch it three times now, and it's just so stupid, unfunny, aimless, and utterly lacking in cohesion that I just have to turn off the DVD player after 20 minutes or so. It started off with an interesting premise, but then - after they killed off the female love interest - the story was just all over the map. And it's not that I need buckets of gore, or that my zombies must be scary, or any number of other, limited fanboy requirements, I would just like the movies I watch to pick a story - ANY STORY - and stick with it! If you want a vastly superior film experience in a similar vein, try Dead Alive or Shaun of the Dead. Hell, even Re-Animator or Bad Taste look like masterpieces compared to this crap. Aside from some of the cinematography and a few, fleeting images, this was an utter waste of time and money for me.

There are 2 worth-while things about the movie. One is Rupert Everette, who gives a good performance as a romantic lead-type, despite the audience knowing he's very out; and two, Anna Falchi (more specifically, her jaw-dropping double Ds).

Beats me. I gave up on this tongue-in-cheek gore flick after an hour. The humor is weird and arbitrary but not funny. For instance, the cemetery man keeps old phone books because they make for classic reading. If you've got a weird premise like this movie does, you need to ground the rest of it in some kind of recognizable reality. Otherwise, it's complete nonsense — and few people aside from Lewis Carroll can pull that off. As for the gore, it bothered me less than a fat man who throws up on people and regularly smears his face with food. Otherwise I might have finished it.

I was bracing myself to tell you that I didn't like one of your favorite movies. I hate saying that to people. I'm glad you found this post and got it over with for me.

I think I see now why I don't like it and other people do. If the main value of the movie is in its symbolism, that explains my lack of interest. I appreciate symbolism whenever I notice it (which is rare), but I'm more interested in other things. When I see a movie like this, for instance, I want to see how real people react to unreal, or fantastic, things. But instead I saw unreal people in unreal situations.

That's not to knock anyone who prefers a movie that places symbolism ahead of realism. In fact, they may well get more out of movies than I do.

Why was I so appalled by the throwing up and all the food-smearing, but not the gore? I don't know. I was surprised myself how I reacted. Maybe the gore was just so wacky and over-the-top that I didn't recoil. But throwing up on people? Yuck!

I almost stuck with the film. And I haven't returned it yet, so I may still finish it. There are certain points where it has a hypnotic quality that I really liked. But the spell is broken by the vomit!

It was a great movie. Strange in a good way (think Jim Jarmusch). I like my movies a little quirky. I didn't think it was corny. It was highly entertaining.

I think people like this film because it doesn't take itself too seriously, Rupert Everett was gave a great performance, and if you are a Rupert fan, as I am, you would appreciate it, also some guys liked seeing the girl's tits, some people liked Gnachi (I know I did) and his little love story, some liked the weird plot and then to top it all off, there's the strange ending. Definetely not your average zombie film. The location was good too.

I was really excited to see this film and when I finally watched it on DVD I really didn't think it was anything to rave about. The one thing I thought ruined the movie was the comic relief sidekick. He just tried SO hard to be funny which seemed really forced. I thought he really dragged down the picture. It came off as more of a drama than a horror film in my opinion. I guess I was expecting something like Braindead with great gore and comedy....oh well, I am going to watch it again soon (maybe I will change my mind).

I also just watched it and found it a bit... incoherent, as bab73 says.

It is dark comedy, but it is not really top-notch gut-busting funny black comedy. Only a few mildly amusing bits occur, and they are spaced out. It was trying to say some interesting things, and I get that, but all in all as a film it was a bit of a wanderer and a little weak on the things it was saying.

I suppose my film counterpoint to this movie would be 'Delicatessen'. Similarly macabre, dark, but more funny and hangs together a bit better.

I like films a little more tight and cohesive, especially if they do involve characters and actual things happening. I don't mind an inconclusive ending, but if there are actual characters and alot of events in a movie, I would like a slightly more coherent storyline. It was certainly beautifully photographed though. And oh my god, Anna Falchi.
