Hard Candy

I foudn this movie I little similar to Hard Candy, mostly because it's a bout an seemingly powerless and predictable woman taking control of a situation by force in order to exact revenge adn pyschologically torture someone. There are, of course, soem differences, like how the abuser commits suicide in the ends of Hard Candy (By, similarily enough, jumping off a roof), but Hard Candy lacks Gerado's "voice of reason". Still, worth seeeing.

Did anyone else see similarities between DATM and another movie?

At first I did not see that much similarity between the two movies, this and Hard Candy. Then I started thinking about it. Both want revenge: Hard Candy, revenge for the supposedly killing of her friend, and knowing he is a child molester. This movie: revenge of someone who hurt her personally and who hurt others. In Hard Candy, she was not hurt by this person, but knew someone who was. They are most similar than I thought of at first. When I saw this movie I never thought of Hard Candy, although it is one of my favorite movies. Good job on thinking of it tho.

You know, you should probably watch before you go giving away endings like that

Yeah, I never thought about the similarities before, but they are MAJOR. Especially the end ... edge of the roof, edge of the cliff ... very similar.

It's never established that Hayley in Hard Candy even knows Donna Mauer, the murder victim. It's even hinted that she doesn't.

She gives the little speach "Maybe not a calabass girl. Maybe not the daughter of a UCW professor." Jeff fills in "Maybe not even a friend of Donna Mauer." She lifts her eyebrows and purses her lips in a smirk and says "Maybe not even named Hayley."

There are similarities in the two films for certain, but Hard Candy isn't as much of a revenge story per se. It leaves that up for interpretation.

Thanks, you just ruined Hard Candy for me and Death and the Maiden. Good job.

well damn now...

your life is over...jump off a cliff or something...

I just watched Hard Candy today and kept thinking about how at times Ellen Page resembled a young Sigourney Weaver. Then it clicked: "ohhh....Death and the Maiden" which I hadn't seen in years. The similarities between the two movies can't be just a coincidence, but I do think Hard Candy would've been a lot better if it shared more elements with Death and the Maiden (the ambiguity, the "voice of reason", the paranoia, etc.).

Hard Candy doesn't hold a candle to this movie. Not only does it involve a 90lb girl repeatedly overpowering a grown man, it is sloppily written, directed, and acted. Maiden on the other hand is directed by a master (Polanski), with tour de force performances by Weaver/Kingsley. No comparison can be made, there are plenty of "imprisonment pictures" out there, no need to equate the cream with the cup.

Not disagreeing with anybody or anything, but can you or the admins put "Spoiler Alert" in your title? You give away the endings to both films.

If its jammed, force it. If it breaks, you needed a new one anyway.

I am a big fan of the intimate theater. If you liked DATM and Hard Candy, then check out "Under Suspicion" with Gene Hackman, Monica Bellucci and Morgan Freeman.

Tnank you for the suggestion, doccharga. Seems worth watching.

I see some similarities; in fact I have even nicknamed HC, 'Death & The Maiden's Retarded Sister'

reply

It's not about revenge.
