Disgustingly bad

I finally saw Death Wish not too long ago, and went on the long but careful road of watching the sequels in order, but they are hard to find on DVD here in Canada.

Anyway, I was watching tv yesterday, I have a lot of channel and it gets to a point where I'm just flipping through and behold, Death Wish 5 is on, I mean it was 2 a.m. and I was just watching the intro looking for the name of the movie, so yeah I'm thinking " I probably shouldn't watch this now " but then thought, ahhh what the hell I'm sure it won't ruin the other sequels seeing as how this was the last one......big mistake.

Now I knew Bronson was old when he did this seeing as how he was in his 50s for the original, but MAN, the budget for this flick was like 500k, and the plot is so damn stupid, I mean it not only defies logic but sheer basic plot element.

I mean I thought for sure at this stage in the series that Kersey is simply a vigilante who takes out the trash or at the least his daughter is somehow invovled, but no, he's engaged/married ONCE again, to a woman CLEARLY decades younger, and I mean....well seriously this film is just god awful...was IV just as bad??

Death Wish 2 was the best of the series IMHO. Pretty good brutal straight forwards revenge flick with some good one liners.

I really really love the fourth Death Wish. I think it is all a matter of personal taste.

reply

I rented the whole series but I only got the chance to see the first two. I'll check out the fourth sometime.

Death Wish 3 and Death Wish 4 are my favourites of the pack. I can never decide which one I like more.

4 is my favorite. It has a twisty script.

I don't win a lot.

reply

It's the only Death Wish movie I've only watched once, whereas the 1st four, I've watched more times than I could count. Yeah, they soooooo shouldn't have made this film.

reply

It was pathetic remake of the same old crap. It had better technique than most of the others but it was even lamer plot and action. That last scene in the factory was really bs, I mean they had all that firepower but they couldn't even wing an old man, disgusting!

What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

Death Wish 5 is truly awful. Cheap, tawdry, terrible acting, no plot... Death Wish 4 was actually quite good, as was Death Wish II. They should never have made this final Death Wish movie because it is embarrassingly bad. The budget is on par with that of an afternoon soap!

For the poor effort

I just saw it and it was really sad to see such a great series go out on such a bad note. They should have stoped after 4.

In all seriousness, despite what people will tell you, this one is actually one of the better entries. In terms of filmmaking, action, directing, acting and indeed how it was scripted it was the best done of all the sequels. I mean it was competently made, scenes flowed, Bronson seemed to be trying and Michael Parks was a fun villain. True, Bronson was old, also true that I would've liked to see Bronson get it on with the bad guys sooner, but it was the best made of all the sequels, so if you like movies and look at quality, in terms of how you looked at sequences here, DW 4 you will find much worse. Noted things about DW 4...

The obvious dummy that explodes in climax.

The way Bronson's love interest is completely forgotten about until finale where they need a hostage.

The way glass shatters before said guy is thrown into it.

The unintentionally hilarious climax, where Bronson walks around with a machine gun in a roller skating rink to which no one notices.

The really lame action sequence in the fish market, which is literally just Bronson shooting numerous people before said bad guys can even get their guns.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy Death Wish 4, I did. It's really bad but it is hilarious. The movie though is very badly made, indeed you'll note many faults on such. In terms of filmmaking 5 is the best sequel, 3 is your second best and 4 is your third best.

Also Death Wish 2 is even worse because unlike DW 4, it's not funny. Unlike DW 5 there aren't any novel kills (Poisoned canolis, Exploding soccer balls, acid bathes, people going into grinders and then seeing their parts spit into a bag.) and unlike 3 it's action isn't as exciting, over the top or campy. It doesn't have the first's power or fascinating politics and frankly, if you see DW 2 again you'll see what I mean by it not being very good. I mean, I could write a book with how badly made it was. How uninspired it felt and how unwatchable it was.

I rank the series in watchability
DW 1
DW 3
DW 5
DW 4 (These 4 i've watched more than 20 times each, 2 i've only seen once and can't finish it even if I see a couple minutes on TV)
DW 2

In terms of filmmaking quality

DW 1
DW 5
DW 3
DW 4
DW 2

I never understood the "they should not have made that sequel" argument. I don't see how a sequel, even if it is way worse than the original, takes any points away from it. (the original)

DW 5 may be the worst of all 5 but I still like it, mainly because of Michael Parks and the already mentioned novel kills.

reply

5 is the worst of the lot..

IMHO in order:

1-Deathwish
2-Deathwish 4
3-Deathwish 2
4-Deathwish 3
5-Deathwish 5

Good post. 2. 3 and 4 are quite awful.

I agree this is the only one I don’t like.

It was the 90s. Not a good decade for this kind of movie.
