Why is this the most violent film in the series?

Why is this the most violent film in the series? You've got a man attacked with a jigsaw,a brutal hit and run, a man set on fire by a remote controlled bomb, a guy choking to death, a guy thrown in a woodchipper and a guy dissolved in acid. Compared to the other films where Kersey shoots the bad guys, i'm just wondering why this is the most violent film.

take me round the world one more time
Why not!

It was rather ambitious to have the film be this violent. One of the reasons why this is the last film.

I'd say a combination of three things:

1) Bronson was getting on in age by this point, so it was easier to have him use traps/machines/etc to kill than engage in lengthy action scenes.

2) by the time this was made (mid-90s) a guy just shooting people was fairly run of the mill, and there was a desire for the "creative kills" horror movies had been employing in the 80s and 90s to add more flair.

3) this was sequel number five, so there was a desire to ramp things up. Rather than up the bodycount, they wanted to make each kill more memorable.

Just my theories.
