Vera or Eden?

****SPOILERS BELOW AND POSSIBLY IN THE REST OF THE THREAD!!!***

So who do you think was Jamie's real mother? Was it Vera or Eden?

reply

Eden. I think Jamie was Eden and Francis's child. Thus that crazy over-cuddly scene between the two before Eden's wedding, the reason Francis hated the child (covered up by jealousy, but really it was because he knew Jamie was his), and why Francis was the only one who continued visiting Jamie after Eden was murdered. Faith even gave the picture of Jamie and Francis side-by-side a strange look, because I think she saw the resemblance.

Much love and BIG KISSES,
Steph

If you read the book, there is a fascinating epilogue asking that very question, with facts to back up each side. In the end it is never resolved. Very well written, and also one of the best TV adaptions of a book I have ever seen :)

I've read the book and I think that its unlikely that Jamie is Francis' child... but it is evenly balanced. I think J is Eden's by soem wartime lover. Was Vera pregnant as well as Eden? Perhaps she lost the child, and when Eden found herself pregnant with a "war baby", she asked for help... and Vera having lost a baby and having problems with Francis, was willing to take the child nad grew so attached to him that she could not bear to give him up....

If Eden was Jamie's mother, that would make Jamie and Francis cousins.

If Vera was Jamie's mother, that would make Jamie and Francis brothers.

There could be a resemblance as one way or the other, Jame, Francis and Faith were cousins at best.

But she didn't look at the picture in a peculiar way because of a resemblance, it was because of Francis, of all people, being the one to keep in touch with Jamie, when no one else bothered, tho who that would have been, I don't know. Vera writing from prison? Faith finally bothered, but neither her father nor the older half-aunt seemed to make no attempt.

Eden. There was a tremendous stigma to unwed motherhood back then, and I just can't believe that the unmarried sister would claim her married sister's baby, especially a selfish girl like Eden. Also, why would Vera have her sister put her name on the birth certificate to hide the fact that Vera obviously cheated on her husband, and then claim the child as her own? That doesn't make any sense.

I think everyone is in agreement Eden gave birth to Jamie. Vera all but stated it just before she killed Eden, saying Eden came to her, asking for help.
