grandma's accent

Ok, this is a great movie, one of our favorites, own it and have watched it many times. Great out-of-typecast role by Liotta, and I'm not a big Whoopie fan but she's terrific. But one thing that bugs the heck out of me is the grandmother's exaggerated east European Jewish accent. It's way over the top and sticks out, especially in the last scene when she's singing with Molly. Anyone else bugged by this?

reply

Doesn't bother me. She sounds exactly like my boyfriend's grandmother.

Yes indeedy - I've got friends who've been in the UK for 60 years and they still sound like pure Vienna.
There aren't any rules around accents - they come, they go.

I know what the accent sounds like, just don't think she does a particularly convincing job with it and so for me, it sticks out and sticks in my craw. Minor flaw overall.

reply

Sounded correct to me....Every Jewish person ive seen or known has had the same accent...

Um, are we talking 2013 here?

Corinna, Corinna was set during the late 50's, so it's possible that Manny's parents either (a) came from Europe or (b) were one generation removed and might have grown up in a predominantly Jewish community, hence the accent.

reply

I didn't like that European twang. IMO it should have been Americanised a bit. Only someone living in a tight European community would have that accent surely.
