There's nothing confusing about the plot if you watch the whole movie - I saw the Director's Cut. It is "over the top" and therefore kinda fun, but I found the cop character TOO over the top and very irritating. Marsh is great - it would have been better with more of her in steamy scenes.
Never seeing the short version I don't know what could be confusing. But there is something unusual about the cop character (regardless the acting), if you have time, read my comment (dated 29.May 2004., with a typing mistake in 1st paragraph - I wrote "anybody" meaning "everybody": but the cop-comment is in paragraph No. 5, so you can skip the rest). Marsh love scenes are great, but otherwise she's much better in The Lover.
