I didn't laugh once...

I don't think I ever put a movie on were I was so keen to laugh, I saw the reviews and the rating on imdb, and straight away went "this will be awesome"

I really tried so fu*king hard to like it but I just sat there and watched it had a little giggle at a couple of parts but most the time I felt like falling asleep...

Do you have to be smoking pot to find it funny or what? I am missing something for sure cause this does not make sense...
I can like almost all movies for a reason, I always go in open hearted and try and understand why the director made the movie and its strong suits but I really just don't understand haha..

And It's the same for allot of his other movies ( dogma, clerks 2, cop out)haven't seen chasing Amy or mallrats yet. I didn't mind Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and red state was great (not a comedy, but still great)

Safe to say I'm not a fan, But I want to be.

So..... Am I missing something or maybe I will just never get it.

reply

Same except I actually did fall asleep. I understand that this movie is considered a cult classic but I just couldn't get into it at all.

reply

Humor is totally subjective. You didn't like it and it's as simple as that. No-one is going to convince you otherwise.

"Do you have to be smoking pot to find it funny or what?"

Oh how original! Everyone who likes this movie must be high or something right? Just because you didn't find it funny....

You're a pretentious jerk.

reply

That's a bit harsh

indeed

To each their own. I've only watched this movie sober and I laugh every single time. A coworker of mine had never seen it, so I brought it in for him to watch. A bunch of us from work hyped how funny it was. But this coworker came back and said he didn't find it funny at all.

reply

Is your coworker a smoker? lol. Or divorced ?

reply

Divorced, yes (and remarried). Smoker, no.

^^^ This

I found this movie hilarious and would count it as one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, but I can also see why some people wouldn't find it funny.

I barely laughed for Spaceballs, but a lot of people consider it one of the funniest movies.

It's not necessarily a knee slapper. Much of the humor is subtle.

reply

For sure lots of subtle humor. Lots of in your face humor too. On the phone ordering the porn titles in front of the kid, just about every scene with Jay. If people say they saw nothing funny at all,I feel they are disingenuous.

I didn't either (although I rarely do watching movies)...

...Regardless of that though, it was still a good enough movie, I guess I don't watch movies personally to laugh (even comedies).

I guess I can appreciate something is funny and deduce that it is indeed funny, without feeling the need to laugh.

On another note, did you watch the film by yourself?

Because... if you research it you will find laughing actually isn't a genuine normal response to something funny, assuming you indeed did watched the film alone.

Laughing is a subconscious social auto-reaction type of thing we do as a response to try and fit in when in a social situation (much the same way clapping is as well.

So, it is possible to watch movies by yourself and still find them funny/entertaining without actually laughing.

reply

I understand your point, I agree with that.. I have watched movies before and found them funny without laughing out loud. and I also have laughed out loud by myself..depending on the movie I guess, but I didn't do either for this one..

I'm going to give this movie another go, I went into it not sure what I was watching and kinda kept expecting something else...

Ill post on here again after and see if its different...

sometimes you have to watch something twice to appreciate it

reply

Yeah i agree Kevin Smith is very hit or miss with his movies, id suggest watching chasing amy and mallrats, personally i think they're the bets of his movies especially mallrats.

I love "Clerks" but it isn't because it makes me laugh hysterically. Don't get me wrong, I think it's funny, but I don't consider it one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. For me, Clerks is a comfort movie. There's not much going on visually, so I can have it on while I'm going something else. There's not much of a story, so if I read or write something and tune it out for 5 minutes, I don't miss anything.

It's kind of a unique movie in that way. There aren't too many movies that I re-watch as much as I re-watch "Clerks" that I can say that about. Some movies are inspirational, others are action packed, some have acting performances so powerful they are worth the re-watches alone. But "clerks" doesn't have any of that, it just makes me smile.

Hope that helps
