He's basically just playing himself in Patriot Games. Running around like a superhero raving about his family. He's much more of a nuanced character in this film. With faults, fears and limitations. And in general a vulnerabilty that makes the plight of his situation very believable. Both films have the same director so I have to assume it was an actual focused effort on Ford's part.

He was definitely playing a different Jack Ryan. This one was more unsure of himself and definitely less confident. I get that in Patriot Games he snapped and then was defending his family, so maybe Ford took a different approach. In Clear and Present Danger he was in over his head the whole time and knew it. I liked the performance and this movie a lot more. Felt more real.
HF's performance may have been more realistic. The same can't be said for the movie
