Is it just me....

Or did Jack Ryan seem like kind of a pansy in this compared to Patriot Games? It's been established that he's a trained Marine yet even when his life is in danger he never once picks up a firearm to defend himself.

I noticed this too. I just made a topic about it a few minutes ago and just noticed yours. I was trying to figure that out too, like why does he shoot people in Patriot Games, and then suddenly he goes out of his way not to hold a gun in the follow up. I wondered if there was some kind of character arc with Jack Ryan that didn't translate to film or something.

Never got around to reading the books (I need to get on that), so I'm not sure about his backstory. But it seemed like he was more of the analyst/desk warrior type than one to pick up a gun. Maybe a moral aversion to using lethal force except when absolutely necessary?

Also, if I remember correctly, in Patriot Games I thought he said the rage he felt when he intervened in the assassination attempt scared him.

A pansy who didn't pick up a gun to save his life but used his hands multiple times? I don't know if I agree, but I too felt it was odd when running through Columbia he didn't have a weapon or didn't grab the one at cafe lindo. But I wouldn't call him a pansy for fighting with his hands.

He has a commission from the Naval Reserve OTC but spent a good portion of his time in a hospital following a helicopter crash. Following his discharge, he spent years as a very successful investment broker and finally as an academic, teaching, lecturing, doing research and writing.

He's hardly what anyone would ever think of as a soldier so yes, he tends to be wary of weapons and does not feel comfortable around them or using them.

Um, his backstory (no pun intended) was that he was a Marine for three years before the helicopter crash. Part of that time was spent as a platoon leader... so, yeah, I'd think of him as a soldier.

Harrison Ford's portrayal is very different from the book character, mainly with his All-American Huckleberry persona in the movies. The book character I remember was more cunning and witty.

reply

Not you. In Patriot Games, Jack is actually a prototype for Jack Bauer in 24. Not so in this film.
