Band-Aid

Why is Maurice wearing a band-aid on his neck? I thought it would be a clue. It is never mentioned.

In some eastern religion, I'm not sure if its Budist or Hindu or what, but in one of those religions they believe that the soul is either removed or placed in the body through the back of the neck. The rumor is that the band-aid was covering that hole, and that the briefcase contained his soul.

A parody of Pulp Fiction maybe? Afterall, both Clean Slate and Pulp Fiction came out the same year....

reply

Interesting theory...there's nothing in the trivia about it. I highly doubt they're doing a take-off of Pulp Fiction, but there is an air of mystery about it...

I was wondering about the band-aid too. Very odd.

You can't do a take-off of one movie in another movie when they both came out in the same year. Second, Clean Slate came out in May, Pulp Fiction in September. Third, at best, it takes a couple years to write a movie, get the production go-ahead, film, edit and distribute a film. There's no way a take-off of one film is going to show up in a film released a few months later...unless, perhaps, it's a take-off of a big blockbuster series that everyone already knows some of the scenes or plot or characterizations of. Example - doing a take-off of one of the later Star Wars or Harry Potter or similar movie series.

Perhaps it was just a red herring. Perhaps it was a part of the story or a secondary plotline that was later cut to make the film more cohesive.

Perhaps Carvey had a cut, a mole removed or something of the sort which required the bandage to be in place when filming started and they then had to leave it in place throughout the entire film for continuity purposes, and it's otherwise completely meaningless.

It was bugging me also, so I had a quick search and came up with the information below. I am aware of the lateness of this reply, but it may help other people.

"In the May release Clean Slate, Dana Carvey is upstaged by a Band-Aid. The actor sports an adhesive bandage on his neck throughout the comic thriller, though it's not part of the plot and Carvey's character never explains why it's there. Is it the mark of an eccentric costume designer? Or did Carvey nick himself shaving every day for three months? When he was quizzed by crew members throughout the production, Carvey refused comment. "Dana was wearing it for good luck," a spokeswoman for the actor now explains, "but he doesn't want to talk about it." Guess he's just superstitious. — Rebecca Ascher-Walsh"

Interesting, thats odd he would never comment on it. I was wondering why it was there too.

My girlfriend assumed this was part of the plot and more specifically she thought the doctor that acts like a friend but is a villain was responsible for giving him some kind of amnesia shot everyday. We were kind of confuseed this was never answered. I told her it is possible that the actor just had some kind of injury in the beginning of filming and they made him wear the thing throughout filming for continuity, but I realize this is a fairly weak theory.
