Baby in carriage

I still don't get the scene where Dana Carvey sees the baby in the carriage and is making faces at it and then this angry cop comes up and threatens him to stay away.

What was the deal with that? Why did that cop hate him so much? You never get any background on that.

The cop is now married with Pogue's former wife. Pogue must have had a terrible falling-out with his former wife and former colleague. The cop is quite protective of his family and angry at Pogue for coming to visit. The cop even tells him to stay away from his son. The interesting thing is that the father of the child is never revealed; it could be Pogue or the cop. The cop may simply be a surrogate father. Of course, Pogue doesn't remember a thing when his former wife asks him if the baby looks like his father.

Very late reply, I know... I just watched this sorely underrated movie again last night for the first time since I saw it back when it opened... but I saw this scene as Dana's character, Pogue, looking for the missing coin in the baby carriage because the clue was that he'd hidden it with someone named Baby or somewhere that has to do with babies, and the baby is his ex-wife's and her new husband's, who happens to be the superior officer whom Pogue struck (probably back when he found out the guy was having an affair with his then wife) and subsequently got kicked off the LAPD (for "striking a superior officer" as it says on his dishonorable discharge paper he looks at during one scene). Since then I take it that the new husband has had the baby with Pogue's ex and hence he comes along and tells Pogue to "stay away from my son!"
