Duke said curly has just got the map from their dead mother and neither of them was aware of the map existence. At the end, they find out that curly has been countless times in the mine looking for the gold and duke always had his part of the map.
shareDuke didn't always have his part of the map. He didn't get it until after everyone gave up on the gold. That's when Duke received the corner of the map. If he would've had that part of the map, they wouldn't have stopped looking for it where it was first buried. It wasn't until he received his part of the missing map, that he found the gold.
