How much of the script is based on Patty Hearst?

Jack mentioned it in the plot and there was a documentary recently on BBC2 about a teenage female heiress of a newspaper kidnapped at gunpoint and then led a media frenzy (with helicopters) on the chase. She was famously converted to side with her captures.

This is exactly what happened in the film, anyone else know about this or know any more details. Thanks

I believe the cases are significantly different. Hearst's kidnapping and the subsequent drama lasted for about a year and a half until she was arrested. It also involved a "terrorist" organization (they were really more semi-idealistic criminals) that intentionally kidnapped a rich girl and really did rob banks (unlike Sheen's character).

Honestly, I don't think they're at all related apart from the element of a little rich girl being kidnapped.

fair point. But the guy in The Chase the red nosed robber robbed banks. As the film was shot in realtime you can't show it to be a car chase for a year and a half so this is a good alternative. We know it wasn't an intentional kidnapping but she eluded to that if looked as if it was staged. At which point HJAck (Sheen) says "Hold on there Patty HEarst" which is where the resemblance is shown. As for terrorist organisation this is where Sheens character is actually innocent and I think this is the only significant difference. Seems lik a strong contender for a spoof based on the facts.

I do believe you're confusing a single reference to Hearst as having far more meaning than is present. Look more into Patty Hearst's case and I'm sure you'll find quite a few more significant differences... the number of people involved, the backgrounds of those involved, the manhunts, the publicity campaigns, the eventual outcome... all are quite different.

The Chase has far more in common with OJ Simpson (whose low speed chase the film pre-dates by three months) than Patty Hearst. Honestly, Die Hard has more in common with Patty Hearst than does the Chase... If you're still hard-pressed to find something, a more fitting spoof would be John Waters' Cecil B. Demented. Oddly enough, Hearst is featured in the movie (as she is in several of Waters' films).

ok but there is media coverage and "some" references, both direcrt and indirect.
