I saw it when it came out. I don't remember if it was a flop, and I vaguely remember Roger Ebert reviewing it and commenting about how Gaby was not really fat, and the two kids Gaby and Mud were not really the outcast "geeks" they were supposed to be, but were "cute as buttons". That's all I can remember about it from 1994.

Although I don't remember if his review was pro or con, and it's not transcribed to his web site, I'm putting two and two together with the following anecdote about M. Emmet Walsh (the bill collector):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M._Emmet_Walsh

According to Roger Ebert's "Stanton-Walsh Rule" - "no movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad". Ebert later conceded that this rule was broken by 1999's Wild Wild West.

So that would mean "Camp Nowhere" doesn't break the rule, and so it isn't "altogether bad".

Looks like it spent two weeks in theater release in the US:

As a low budget film I don't think it could have lost very much money and is probably profitable now from ancillary.

It's available now for HD download on iTunes Store and Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006RXQCN8/ref=atv_feed_catalog?tag=i mdb-amazonvideo-20

It's also available on blu-Ray: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Camp-Nowhere-Blu-ray/25963/

I actually saw it in the theater and all I remember about it was that it was awful.

I think I went to see it because our AC was broke and it was playing at a second run theater, for a buck. When it got really hot we'd go see movies to escape the heat for a little while.
