he would have ended up directing the same play. This is a great movie.

I think that maybe David Shayne IS Barton Fink and that if he'd stayed in the business, he'd have wound up in Hollywood, writing for the pictures.
Barton is a wicked jab at Clifford Odets, who is deified as the house organ for the Group Theatre in the 30s and who went out to Hollywood and had a very undistinguished time of it writing for pictures. I think that Clifford Odets is highly overrated. Every time I see one of his plays staged, I always come away thinking "this guy stinks! What's the big deal about Clifford Odets???".
