I agree wes anderson is awesome he has his own
style and is definetly one of the great directors
right know.The only thing
that sucks is most people i know have never
heard of him or his movie and when i show
them the movies they think they suck.

reply

Cuz he did a brilliant job?

reply

his brand of humor's so different from all that "dude wheres my car" *beep* out there...wes is a love-him-or-hate-him sort of director.

i think you can see clearly wes' natural ability to create a work of film in this bottle rocket short. the film is done with such confidence. with the complex notions of he continuation of conversations as scenes change, dramatic hand held camera shots during the robbing sequence that heighten the scenes suspense, and the tightly and perfectly edited pinball montage, it is hard to believe that this was a debut short film.

james l brookes obviously shared my oppinions when he first saw Bottle Rocket at sundance, as he was very much responsible for giving Wes a full budget to turn this quirky little short into a full length picture that launched Wes career. (owen and like wilson's as well)

James L Brooks didn't see the movie at Sundance...

reply

Where was it? I was under that impression.

reply

His associate Polly Platt gave him a copy (-- read the foreword to Rushmore)

very interesting.

thank you for clarifying.

I watched this for the first time last night and thought it was an exceptional short film. It's as funny, breezy, and restless as the two leads, and has the lifeforce of a great French New Wave film. This early effort makes me yearn to see Wes Anderson use more jazz music in his work.

Finally saw this on YouTube tonight and was very pleased.

There are some definite New Wave references thoughout. The jazz music is a staple of the time. The gun sequence seems like a reference to Rules of the Game (which is not technically new wave). The heist and cafe setting seem to allude to Band of Outsiders. The quick jump cuts throughout.

Very well done.
