Carly helping Mrs. Johnson with her makeup

Earlier in the movie Carly tells her daughter that she is much too fair skinned for dark eye-shadow, but she is putting dark shadow on Mrs. Johnson who is fair skinned as well. Was she trying to make her look bad, or am I reading too much into the scene?
