1994's Best Actress nominees weren't the best, except for the winner.
My line-up in this order:
1. JESSICA LANGE, Blue Sky
2. Crissy Rock, Ladybird, Ladybird
3. Irene Jacob, Three Colors: Red
4. Sigourney Weaver, Death and the Maiden
5. Linda Fiorentino, The Last Seduction
Even with the best of the best, Lange was best.
Her character was too baity and her performance was sublime. She had to flirt, rage, scare, seduce and imitate Monroe and Bardot perfectly, all of which she did in one performance at age 41-42.
I think that's why the other nominees were name checked in: The Academy knew it's winner as soon as Blue Sky's release was announced.
