The Irish accent haha

Tommy lee jones accent in this film is hillarious, it's like a leprechauns accent. Anybody else think so? There are so many films with even worse accents. I'm Irish and I have never heard anyone from here or the north of Ireland talk like that. lol

reply

it is pretty funny! But so is him acting like a psycho putting a bomb together singing a U2 song! The accent is easier to digest than say Bridges bostonian accent! now that one was hard to stomach. still a decent film.

reply

Lee Jones was decent enough. He sounded okay. I had no problem with Lloyd either. I'm an Irish guy in Boston, and I thought they were both pretty decent. Neither one of 'em were so bad that they took away from the film. Well acted by all

reply

i heard he sounded more german than irish lol

reply

Only someone who's never heard a real Irishman talk could call Tommy Lee Jones accent "decent". It makes me cringe and I'm a Scot.

Richard Gere's Irish accent in The Jackal was goddamn awful but Tommy's is 1000 times worse.

that scene was the hilite. great movie because of talented actors

reply

In the famous words of "Comic Book Guy": Worst... accent... ever.
As for Bridges, he mumbled so much that hearing his awful "Bawston" accent would have been a relief.

reply

haha Comic Book Guy, he is hot!

reply

Bridges had a Boston accent? He sounded American to me.

As for Jones, he sounded kinda East-European at times.

everyone is entitled to their own opinion. i think it was a fake accent put on by an actor... its bound to be flawed. but to call someone's opinion unreal or whatever just because they dont live in Ireland (or in your case London) is very mean spirited and unfair. Just disagree dude. Dont insult people.

Oh and by the way, where you live doesn't make you an official expert either.

Nobody cares about your *beep* limey or mick accents anyway.

reply

I'm Irish,i'm born and live in Ireland.I can't really speak for Northern Ireland accents as much.
As for accents Jeff Bridges can be ignored as bearable.
Tommy Lee Jones is a bit all over the place, the problem with Hollywood is that the accent is always overdone. No subtlety,it almost sounds like a comical parody. In fairness to him,the jailbreakout when he speaks as gaeilge is quite good.

The script didnt help,Lloyd Bridges was terrible, the accent was atrocious as a result. The "we're Irish" is too in your face. Really ugly props which almost make me nausous looking at them.

I still like the movie and it's less pro IRA than a lot of them out there.
I prefer Patriot Games over The Devils Own,the confrontation between Ford and Harris in the bar "i will put such a stranglehold on your money you'll be out on the streets throwing rocks"

Its just a shame that the money supply wasnt cut off sooner

reply

I've just seen the film for the first time. I've never heard an accent like it. I am Irish and I have to say its the worst Irish accent ever. Ever. Comic book guy was right lol.

Bridges had a Boston accent? [] He sounded American to me.

Just curious as to which nation you think Boston is in? (Don't pretend you meant 'Boston, Lincolnshire, UK', it's obviously Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.) or is this some lame attempt at humor?

That's what the internet is for... slandering others anonymously

reply

/Sigh

He meant the typical American accent. I thought that was quite obvious given the context.

reply

Boston is in America...

reply

Come on, what did you expect? Tommy Lee Jones is from Texas and Jeff Bridges probably grew up a surfer dude. They just didn't get enough dialog coaching. It's a long way from "y'all" and "yonder" or "surf's up!" to "Top o' the marnin" or "Hahvahd". Sorry, that's the best I can do for spelling such accents. I'm not even sure I've heard a real Irish or Boston accent. In fact I know I haven't.

What struck me about the story was the damage that the violence and danger did to the people involved. I am blessed that I have never lived in such circumstances and for that I am grateful.

It's a movie, it tells a story. Sometimes we have to help that along by not paying too much attention to the faults. Tommy Lee Jones was wonderful in the character he played. So dangerous and disarming at the same time. Jeff Bridges was good as a man haunted by his past and determined to keep it from happening again. Maybe not brilliant but good.

reply

These two so called Irish accents must be the worst in Film history. How they let this be released with these ridiculous accents boggles my mind. The film cost millions to make and was ruined by there accents.

reply

Well, i'm 100% irish and a good mimic to boot. I was born in Northern Ireland and have lived on both sides of the border. Tommy Lee Jones made me laugh, he was THAT bad. Not only could he not figure out which part of Ireland he was meant to be from, his entire performance in the film was over the top.
I got a good laugh out of his crap performance though and he knocks Richard Gere off the top spot of crap portrayals of irishmen by Americans:

1/ T L Jones in Blown Away
2/ Richard Gere in The Jackal
3/ Brad Pitt in The Devil's Own

A few other laughable plot points of note:

All the prisoners in the jail spoke fluent irish, again unintelligibly.

Tommy Lee Jones character had never heard of U2, obviously in all his time in jail, his fellow prisoners had never mentioned them either.

The " Guinness" looked more like coke.

Tommy Lee Jones' superhuman ability to never get caught while making amazingly complex bombs, hitting the pub on a regular basis and blasting out U2 while he's supposed to be hiding!

I give this film 10/10, as a comedy!

reply

Haha! Agreed! Particularily on the Coke/Guinness issue.
As to the accents: I am German but I've worked in different irish pubs and have had friends from all over Ireland over the years. To me, TLJ's accent sounded like a northern irish accent, but I understand that to a native speaker it might sound worse that Jeff Bridge's who actually didn't even try to sound irish (apart from one or two scene - "My name is Liam...") because it sounds like a mixture of different accents from different places in Ireland. I think hearing a mixture of Berlin accent, Cologne accent and Munich accent would also sound very german to an english speaking person and absolutely laughable to a german.

Haha. And by the way: that Wolftones-Clichee. Irish nationalists always listen to the Woftones :D

reply

yeah, listening to the accent tonight.....It's like TLJ is trying to be from every part of Ireland all at once.

Hey, they did have a decent stepdancer in it though for the wedding reception! *LOL*

It is too bad that all you folks seem to have gotten from the movie were the accents. This whole thread complaining about accents. Who the hell cares about the accents?

reply

This movie is unwatchable !! The producers/director must have been ready to slit their wrists watching the rushes. How do you keep getting up everyday after productions started ? Insult Jones, Bridges or Bridges ? It must have been amazing on the set - "Hey, not bad eh ?" Yes your doing great Mr. Jones/Bridges/Bridges" with everyone else rolling their eyes - just waiting for a lunch break to be able to spill out their thoughts in private:

"Quick, get in - close the door. OH MY G_D !!! Can you even BELIEVE how BAD this is ...?"

"NO, I CAN'T !! This is SO embarrassing - my entire family and everyone I know is waiting for this movie to come out - I wonder if its not too late to ask for my scene to be cut ?? !!!"

I don't know how any of you made it through the entire movie. At least I didn't pay to see it - I would have left and snuck into another theatre. Man this is bad. The "Elvis/Emperor has no clothes thing must have applied here. Badder than bad. Soooo bad....THAT BAD !!! I could do a better accent in fact...and thats saying something/nothing. I love "Quiz Show" also and the Boston accent(s) in that ALMOST ruined it for me. There is no "almost" here. Think I've made my point now...I'll shut up.

reply

Favourite irish-accented phrase:

"Oiiii paddy!"(Brad Pitt in "The Devil's Own")...

reply

I completely agree!! I'm watching this crap right now and can't believe how Horrible it is. Worse acting/accents I've ever seen. How the hell did this get thru editing?? How can anyone like this?? Jeff bridges worse gig without any doubt! I wonder what he thinks when he watches it? Probably wants to kill himself in shame! His whole family probably feels suicidal after watching this utter embarrassment of a performance! I gotta turn this crap off now before I kill myself!

reply

I got other things from the film too, the action was quite good to be honest.

But yes, this thread is about the quality of the acting, specifically the accent of Tommy Lee Jones.

Tommy Lee Jones is usually a pretty good actor, he was great in No Country for Old Men. But in this film, his acting quality was very bad. Sadly it looked like his research for Irish accents must have been watching the leprechaun horror movie series. Which is a shame...

reply

Bridges accent is poor at best, Tommy Lee Jones' attempt however is without doubt the worst Irish accent I have ever heard in cinema. I totally agree that the film should never have been released with these accents. As an actor, surely being able to mimic an accent is an integral skill. If I auditioned to play Pablo Escobar and could not perform a Columbian accent I would not expect to be ofered the role. Surely they would have been better to have an Irish actor, Liam Neeson for instance?

I did enjoy the film, but not in the way I think it was intended. I spent more time laughing than being sat on the edge of my seat.

The accent was bad but then we're judging an accent on what is acceptable to people who know the accent as opposed to the general audience. Two very different things. The latter expects to hear that type of accent that makes actual Irish people roll their eyes and giggle and therefore is the one that is used. That's the one they recognise. This phenomenon extends to most every accent where there is just a basic template that most attempts are based off, most subtleties of language are cast aside.

reply

None of the accents in this movie were any good.

Yep and it's what Hollywood constantly do. They seem to have this fairy tail love of the Irish but forget that IRA terrorists are from Northern Ireland and sound nothing like what they believe. The Northern Irish accent is quite strong. Being in the UK we had a teacher from NI and it's quite a granting, annoying accent. Doesn't sound pretty. No offence.
