Question about the 'Betty' near the end... (SPOILER)

I have a question. I don't get the 'Betty' at the end of the film that Jimmy/Liam stepped on in Ryan's boat. Was it a dud or confetti? If so, how did he know to step on it?

I was wondering about that too - except it's not how did he know to step on it but how did he suddenly figure out it was a dud.

Thinking the same thing myself. May be he just figured he wouldn't have set that as a full booby trap in case he stepped on it himself.

This had always confused me. I think it's one of my two theories:

1. Liam figured out that it was one of his betties that he uses during his lectures.

2. Liam was willing to sacrifice himself to stop Ryan from killing Kate and Lizzie.

Okay firstly He didn't know where it was he stepped on it by accident and as for knowing if it was a dud or not, he knew it was a dud because he knew Gerrity would never use something as simple as that, Jimmy knew he would have a bigger explosion in mind, especially given how elaborate he had been with his previous bombs.

He's not going to just let a betty wipe him out.
