Stowe really playing the violin?

It's stated on the main page that Stowe learned to play the violin for this role, but as someone who has dabbled in learning different instruments, I find it hard to believe that she could learn the violin (a tough string instrument)and play as well as she did in it's entirety. Plus, it was excellent playing, esp. with her solos. Does anyone have any knowledge about this or are there any 'stringers' out there who would know how long it must have taken to conquer the violin the way she did, if she indeed played in every scene? Thanks in advance, as it's been driving me crazy. It's obviously her voice in 'Insulated Man', but the violin??

My brother learned how to play the concertina when he was 5 years old and by 10 he started winning talent contests in Wisconsin. I watched him pick up any instrument, find the chords or read a book on how the instrument worked, and then play them like he practiced all of his life on that instrument, including the accordian, violin, piano, organ, guitar, banjo, saxaphone, trumpet, etc... I was pretty jealous of him because I tried for years to learn to play a guitar, and he picked mine up and played it better than me in just 3 days! Needless to say I quit trying to play a guitar, because I realized I never would be any good.

I feel my brother is wasting his life driving truck when he should be a concert pianist or some kind of a musician somewhere. He said playing is just a hobby to him and he hates playing in front of crowds, even when he was getting standing ovations!

I believe that someone who can play an instrument very good, comes from the heart, not by years of training and someone who has THAT talent can play any instrument. The triva of Madeleine Stowe states she was a concert pianist until her instructor died when she was 18, so yes, she could have learned the violin pretty quick.

Hi harvester3...thanks so much for responding. Good grief, now I'm jealous of your brother, too! That is amazing that he has been given that talent to basically pick up any instrument and play it so well. Any instrument I've 'played' has been due to lesson after lesson or several years of band practice back in high school. Believe me, I know just what you mean. That's a shame that your brother isn't comfortable playing in front of crowds, as I'd consider that an ideal 'job' or career, playing music.
I'm sorry I missed that Stowe was a concert pianist at one point, so you're right. That would definitely explain her ability to play such beautiful notes on a violin. I really apreciate your reply.
(I also bet you're better on the guitar than you're admitting...;-)

As a matter of interest the piece she was playing in the bar with the man who was singing was not played on the violin........I checked with my piano that the last note was the C below middle C (or thereabouts - my piano is out of tune!) so I guess she was playing it on the viola............I could hear it was too low for the violin.
Beautiful, though; and what a beautiful woman.
I thought the movie was excellent, by the way; not the sort of thing I usually watch but I couldn't stop watching.

Thanks for that, pollyparrot-1! I didn't even think of a viola; you must be very astute to have picked up on that. So now, Stowe is obviously blessed with the ability to play several instruments? I really appreciate you posting and mentioning that fact....it's very interesting! You sound quite musically inclined yourself!!
I loved the music in that movie, also. My favorite was 'Insulated Man' and Stowe's voice on that track is so clearly her. Don't you know she had a blast playing/singing with the Drovers? I, too, loved the movie and in fact, have it recorded so I can watch it whenever I want. I think you have great taste!

Really?!!? That's exaclty what I've been wondering. She plays the instrument in more than one song and the one that has the beautiful solo has me baffled that someone could just learn to play a violin so quickly and sound that 'soulful'. Thanks for your input. Now I feel like I've got to Google this, lol. (Love your signature...;-)

So, he probably tutored her in basic finger placement (?). I'm definitely going to Google him, as I've never even heard of him. Even if he did nothing but show her how to appear as if she were really playing each song, what an amazing job he did; that would seem to be as much of a task as teaching actual lessons on a new instrument (much less a string). I'll post what I find out about him...you've really got me interested, now! Maybe I'll get lucky and find some samples of his music since your mention of him and his talent. Thanks so much, ohjosephine...;-)

Sorry for the delay in replying, oh. Thanks so much for that information! So he's a member of the Drovers? Am I correct in thinking that? I'm going to go check out the YouTube videos right now. I rally appreciate it!!!

I am sorry if this is a disappointment to some of you, but Miss Stowe is certainly not playing what we hear. It looks quite good, though, a lot better than musicians playing in movies usually.

I play the violoncello myself, and it is quite obvious to me that it is dubbed. For instance, you hear the violin player 'change bow', but Stowe still moves the bow in the same direction. (Excuse my mediocre English, I am from Holland.)

As I said, it looks rather convincing, although Meryl Streep is an even better violonist in 'Music from the Heart'.

Yes, it's clear it was dubbed. While it COULD be her playing the music that is dubbed in, I doubt it. Yes, she learned to play, but clearly for the visuals of the scenes.

For instance, the one scene, in a bar where she was wearing the red dress, the violin music for much of it didn't even come close to her movements of the bow (i.e. dub). Not to mention almost ALL music scenes like that in films are dubs. Heck, most non vocal sound is dubbed in.

I am having a hard time finding verification, but I believe Char Malloy-Baum from the band "Big Hat" played the violin parts.

I play the violin and find this so hard to believe that I actually do not believe it. :)
Most violinists learn to play the instrument at a very young age (I started at the age of 6). I may be mistaken about this, but I believe the dexterity and looseness of wrist joints necessary to properly hold the bow and play the instrument so it doesn't sound like fingernails on a chalk board are very difficult to acquire at a more advanced age. Mind, I'm not saying it is impossible, just noting that it strikes me as rather difficult and involving a lot of practice. Even well trained violinists have to practice a lot to stay in shape. A certain basic knowledge will become ingrained, like riding a bicycle, but to play well requires really more than just cursory acquaintance with the instrument.
So to me it just doesn't sound credible that an actor/actress decided to 'quickly learn how to play the violin' for a single movie.

She may have learned to play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star or something but I cannot believe under any circumstances that she truly was the one playing any of the music in this film or that she truly played the violin in any real way. In fact, I came on here specifically to comment on how poorly the violin scenes were done as the syncing and finger placement and bow movements were all terrible.

I would imagine she "learned" enough to not look like an utter buffoon while pretending to play but it sure didn't look like much more than that.
