the parents in this movie were stupid

I mean, seriously, the parents in this movie were complete idiots. What kind of parents are they? They have no damn clue what's going on and don't notice that the kid is sneaking out and living in that castle he bought with the 1 million. And plus with him being grounded they surely wouldn't let him go out, but yet, his convincing stories completely fool them, I mean, the parents are totally gullible!

They were also pretty much jerks, especially to Preston.

- they let the older two boys set up office in the younger boy's bedroom, and let them bully him

- the father constantly lectured about earning money, then offered the older boys money for nothing when they were on the way out to the ball game

- the aftermath of the wrecked bike was horrible. Most parents would be relieved their kid wasn't killed, and would be ready to go after whoever nearly ran him over. Instead, he gets a speech about taking care of his belongings.

you never will go broke appealing to the lowest common denominator

Preston's dad is the archetypal capitalist douchebag.

I agree that they didn't handle the bike situation well and to top it all off they grounded him for it.

The mom seemed to start chiding the dad though after Preston was sent upstairs and all; it would have been interesting to see her speech to Fred in a deleted scene.

I'm thinking maybe Preston lied about the accident and said he just left his bike unattended in a parking lot, and it got run over.
