How close is this movie to the book?

I read the book about ten years ago, but this one is very closer to the book. To begin with, you can't get the real spirit of the book without Beauty narrating it. I saw parts of the 1971 version and it was driven by the human actors. Granted, I only saw about 30 minutes of it but it seemed the only similar things was a boy named Joe who loved a black horse and cruelty to horses. In the book Joe was not the son of the man who bred Beauty, he was a stable boy in Beauty's wealthy home like in this movie. This movie follows all of Beauty's families as the book tells them.
