These aren't all good movies, but they're horse movies none the less. I'll give you a rating beside each of them, aha.

Flicka (Good)
Dreamer (Good)
Virginia's Run (Poor)
A Horse For Danny (Bad)
Hidalgo (Great)
National Velvet (Poor)
International Velver (Poor)
The Black Stallion (and series) (Poor)
Misty (Good)
Horse in a Gray Flannel Suit (Fair)
The Horse Whisperer (Good)
Seabiscuit (Great)

I could name more, but it's getting a little boring, lol.

I saw a movie years ago about a poor family, I think only a father and a son or maybe 2 sons, who lived in a trailer or something. The boy(s) "finds" a white horse. It's not an English-language movie, I think it is Eastern-European. And there was something about a cave, beach, the horse runs along the beach... That's all I remember. I tried making a powersearch here on Imdb, but I can't find it. I would like to know what it is called and if it is possible to get it on DVD somewhere. Does anyone know?

I think the movie you're looking for is an Irish film called "Into the West." It's out on video and DVD. I think you'd like it.

There's a really old movie (from the 50's) about a boy and a Camargue horse called "White Mane," but I don't think that's what you're looking for. It's beautiful, but ends very badly.

Here's some horse films.

Seabiscuit (Excellent)
Horse in the grey flannel suit (very good)
The Black Stallion (OK)
Black Stallion returns (poor)
Phar Lap (excellent)
Shergar (never seen)
Hidalgo (OK)
Spirit (excellent)
The Little Unicorn (not bad)
Blue Fire Lady (never seen)
The Derby Stallion (never seen)
Flicka (2006)(never seen)
My Friend Flicka (good)
Touching Wild Horses (never seen)

Simpson's Movie = 8.5/10! Great movie

It was "Into the West", but I was so sure I remembered it to be an Eastern European movie... Well, that's what happens I suppose when you see something as a kid and don't remember too well.

reply

That`s weird because the film you described sounds exactly like the film I loved as a kid (and loved) but could never remember the name... I looked up "Into the West" but pretty sure that`s not the one. I watched it when I lived in France on TV and it didnt seem to be dubed so perhaps it was French.

reply

The Colt is pretty good, if you can find it.

It's about a colt that is born in the middle of a war, and they take it along with them throughout the war. It doesn't really sound good, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Simpson's Movie = 8.5/10! Great movie

Wow! I can't believe y'all didn't think 'The Black Stallion' was a good movie! I grew up on that movie, and it's soundtrack (although it was released on a record). And 'The Black Stallion Returns'?!? I absolutely LOVE both movies! Oh well.... =o)

One horse movie, I noticed that nobody had mentioned yet, is 'Sylvester' with Melissa Gilbert (from Little House on the Prairie). I enjoyed this movie very much also!

-sigh- childhood memories....

=oD

The Black Stallion was OK. 7/10. I could watch it again :)

Black Stallion = 7/10
Black Stallion returns = 6/10.

The Black Stallion makes me angry.

I watched part of it once and had to turn it off before I broke the TV.

It was just soooo bad...

McLovin? It sounds like a sexy hamburger.

reply

I think it could have been better. There were some nice horse scenes though.

Are they later in the movie?

I only watched the first half hour so...

The Silver Bromby - I quite like it :)

I laugh, therefore I am.

--------------------------------------

The horse was galloping across the beach. I turned it off eventually so I don't know what happened next. The boy was annoying me.

reply

the silver bromby, eh? never was so disappointed in a horse movie, which is saying something. terrible terrible depiction of a great kid's book, so pleased they left the rest alone.

the first half of the black stallion was great, the second half meh.

seabiscuit had great running scenes but the rest was fairly cringe-worthy.

phar lap had enough exciting elements to make it enjoyable.

any horse movie that wishes to be taken seriously should 1. NEVER have mickey rooney in it 2. be as far from disney as possible and 3. assume the viewers have an iq over 60.

My all time favorite childhood movie is "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken." Someone else mentioned it in an earlier post, but if you still haven't seen it, I'd definitely suggest it. I can almost quote it line for line while watching it.

reply

I had a look at it once but it said nothing about the horse! Is it a horse movie?

You're looking at my siganture!

reply

It's more about the woman (who actually existed) and her career with diving horses. There are horses in it though. I'm a horse person and I really enjoyed it. A+

This version of Black Beauty is one of the best horse movies. Sadly, many aren't very good.

Phar Lap is excellent so is Casey's Shadow

The Black Stallion and The Black Stallion Returns have some lovely scenes but are vastly different from the books. The scenes on the beach are some of the most artistic horse scenes every shot. Worth watching the first film for.

Original My Friend Flicka and Thunderhead, Son of Flicka are good. I hated the recent Flicka remake.

I hated The Horse Whisperer and the book as well.

Seabiscuit is OK, Dreamer is OK, both are not very true to the real stories. Toby Maguire is lousy casting for Red Pollard.

The Miracle Of The White Stallions and the Horse In The Grey Flannel Suit are Disney movies from the old TV series and pretty good for not being big budget films. The real Lippizaners from the Spanish Riding School are in the first one. Worth watching to see them. There are more old Wonderful World of Disney episodes about horses but not easy to find. Tonka, Born To Run, Justin Morgan, Run Appaloosa Run, Ride a Wild Pony. I remember them all as being pretty good. Better than many horse movies.

Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken does have horses but is really a romance

National Velvet is a classic but The Pie is supposed to be a piebald (black and white pinto) and they use a chestnut, annoys the heck out of me.

International Velvet is ok but The Pie was a gelding. Therefore he could not sire Arizona Pie.

Better add War Horse to your list.

Ther than that, My Friend Flicka the original - National Velvet, the original, Thunderhead, Sea Biscut, Black Stallion, Misty of Chintogue, Secratariat (spelling stinks)

I didn't look at the other answers, so these are probably on the list...
