Among the many problems, the score really didn’t work.
The Axel F theme adapted for orchestra was cheesy beyond belief.

How hard would it have been to just get some other synth-jockey to cover Faltermeyer's score? They'd have had to pay him licensing fees either way.
Maybe given that it was at that point, well into the '90s, the filmmakers figured that synth-music like Harold Faltermeyer's score would've felt too much of its time.

Well then thank god Joseph Kosinski and Tom Cruise didn't feel the same way about Faltermeyer's "Top Gun Anthem" (though, to be fair, the rest of soundtrack for "Top Gun: Maverick" was more conventional and less trendy)
