The only right-wing intellectual movie I know

First : it's a brilliant movie, full of funny and unexpected moments. But what really made this one stand out for me from countless other intellectual/romantic/political movies, is that this is in fact a 'right-wing' intellectual movie, a very rare thing. Why do I think this?

Well first the heroes are a US businessman and a military navalofficer. In any other 'intellectual' movie they would be the bad guys, obnoxious white dudes only thinking of money, booze, drugs and cheap women and glory. In fact here, they are very likeable guys. The business guy is very unsure with women, isn't all that greedy and his cousin, the navalofficer, just got in the navy because he didn't find anything else to do with his life. Again : in all 'intellectual' Hollywood and definitely non-Hollywood movies they would be utterly ridiculized.
Also Spain was in a left-wing anti-US mood in those days but instead of, as in all other intellectual flicks, those left-wingers are made fun of (where are the red ants !?) or simply portrayed as a bunch of brutal terrorists (the naval officer gets seriously wounded by gunshot). There is also something about respect for the elders, those 2 young businessmen caring for the last of 'The Greats', one of the company directors who fought in WWII, who is dying of cancer. This would be something unheard of in any left-wing intellectual movie.

Ok, if this was your run-of-the-mill loud US flagwavinfg actionmovie (oh my god they kidnapped the president!!!and hidden a nuclear device somewhere in the Capitol)and starring Bruce Willis or Denzel Washington, those leftwingers/terrorists would ofcourse be the baddies. But Bruce and Denzel rarely star in 'intellectual/political movies', so here is my point : this is in fact a disguised political film, but a right-wing on top of it, which makes it almost unique.

Please comment on this or better : list some right-wing intellectual movies, at least if you know of any !

Good observations. Where are the red ants? OMG that was hilarious when he stomped on them. Fred put those pretentious, self-righteous know-nothings in their place.

Great film. Although it is political, I see it as Stillman's tribute to the time he enjoyed in Barcelona as an American living and working there. He obviously loved many things about the city and the people, and he met his Spanish wife there. Also, it's clear he was frustrated by the anti-American sentiment, especially that based on cartoonish stereotypes and disinformation, and he wanted his characters to react to that and set the record straight, to the extent that they could. They do come out looking like the good guys, without the typical ugly American abroad nonsense that you usually read about and see portrayed in films.

Besides being very witty and entertaining, it is a very intelligent film, and it has a beautiful, almost dreamy tone to it.

Thanks for the comment. Didn't know about that.

Yeah; their faux 'intellectualism' was hilarious ~

Agree on all counts! 

I didn't see this as being particularly intellectual or right wing either. And there are plenty of films in which the armed forces and businessmen are the 'good guys'.

I liked the movie. But you can't really say that Fred is a likable guy. He's pretty obnoxious throughout most of the movie. Entertaining, but obnoxious.

This is one of my favorite films and I've never seen it at all as "right-wing".

And I am not at all on the political "right".

So having a job or serving in the military automatically makes you "right wing" that's a silly stereotypes like this that trivialize life. I don't see these guys as heroes but as just regular people navigating through life in Spain. The director thankfully left the cliched Americans in Europe crap out of it. It's a nice little film it's not right wing at all though.

I get the feeling Stillman is just sensible and he isn't "right-wing". See his latest film, "Damsels in Distress", he defends jocks and fraternities, but still, he says that they're dumb and elitists. He's very autocritical from his very first film. But when Fred said that the word "estadunidense" is BS or something (when is the politically correct term), that was pretty stupid, so egotistical of him, because he just considers his language (dense has no meaning in spanish or portuguese, and "denso", a close word, doesn't mean anything bad). After that statement, I couldn't like him.
This movie is also very critical about religion (and autocritical "You seem very intelligent for an American". Fred: "Well, I'm not."). And I don't think right-wing people have this "depressing" (in a good way) kind of humor, the two characters are basically just complaining about stuff all the movie.

The only rightwinger in this film is Fred, and he is nothing close to an intellectual. He doesn't really seem to be a military type either. His character seems very contrived.
