shareBut he was in the middle of Birdie's club when he did it surrounded by Birdie's homies. I always assumed that this implied that he died, otherwise it would be a MAJOR plot hole how he managed to escape dozens of guys that were strapped and trying to kill him on site.

maybe most of birdie's crew didn't like him, and only stayed with him because they were afraid of him. it's quite possible that Birdie's crew was more relieved that he was gone than pissed and looking for revenge. either way, it's basically implied that Bugs life isn't really going anywhere fast and killing Birdie in the middle of a packed club, there's a good chance bugs was either a)arrested afterwords or b) retaliated on one of birdie's crew.
I think the main point of the shooting was that the antagonist of the film dies and all the other cliche stuff of crime doesn't pay, watch who you piss off, karma and all that jazz.
I can guarantee you that none of them would have been relieved. They were leeches, and their host just died. No matter their feelings toward Birdie, their paycheck just got shot.
