Music

Did anyone else think the music was awful? It was so unsubtle and cheesy in a bad way...not that it was completely ill-fitting, as a comedy, but still. I heard good things about Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson's scores...but this one didn't leave a good impression on me.

i agree, reminded me of Hal Hartley's electronic scores (for his own movies)

I feel that making caricatures of the Western people and their culture, including the music, is intended to be humorous in this movie. It's a reversal on the old phrase "inscrutable Oriental": here, the Japanese fellow is the straight man, and it's the Westerners who seem strange. I feel the spirituality is intended seriously, however.

This is one of my favorite movies. I feel fortunate that Landmark Theaters showed it in my town, if only for one week. Managed to see it three times that week.

This is one of my favorite movies too. I regert not having seen it in the theatres when I had the chance but have been a proud owner of the VHS since it came out. I hate that more people have not seen the movie because I would love to discuss it on the boards.
