The news coverage and Michael Jackson (spoilers)

I think the purpose of those scenes is show how the media gives too much attention to the perpetrators and not enough coverage to the victims. This is particularly true in mass killings where victims are faceless abstracts. By the end of the movie, we do actually care about who got shot because we just watch an entire movie on them, but again, the media chooses to focus on the identity of the killer instead. Haneke is showing how we lack compassion for those we see in the news because they're unknowns, and he making us realize how wrong that is.

Also, not meaning to sound disrespectful but...

In news coverage, is it even POSSIBLE and is it really also, if it is, IMPORTANT to give "victims" more coverage than perpetrators and also - how?

And is the media, whether in the 90s and in Austria as shown in this movie, or elsewhere, or even in general, really DELIBERATELY like that and thus wrong or does it simply not know better but then if you were to objectively cover news, how do you go about it?

And also, even if the media does focus on the killer here or perpetrator there, does it really glorify or sympathize with them or simply attempt to make the public aware by letting everyone know who the criminal is?
