Please. Why try to improve on perfection? And it's not like americans will watch a show about a minister anyway!

She isn't supposed to be a catholic priest, just a (protestant, I assume) Minister, as the show's title, Minister of Divine indicates.

she will most likley be an Episcopal priest since the original was an Anglican one. The Episcopal Church is the Anglican church in america, at least for now. However i think they will ruin the show, anybody but kristie alley and fox i mean come on it will just be awful

Well, since Alley IS a Scientologist, if you can call that a religion, I would like to go on record as actually saying that I would watch at least one episode of the show if it was about her being a "minister" in scientology. I don't even know if they have a comparable position like that in Scientology. But I will pat myself on the back. Now there's a show.

As a long time American "Vicar" fan, I'd like to apologize ahead of time for what the FOX network will undoubtedly do to one of my favorite UK shows.
On the positive side, I predict it won't last long...then again, looking at what passes for comedy here, it may last 10 years...

Oh, well, there's always Brit Wit on PBS on Saturday nights...(Long live Stephanie Cole!!)

Well, here we are in April..and this is the first I've heard of this bad, bad news. Count me in as the third voice of apology..I cannot even IMAGINE what kind of a mess they're going to make out of a very fine show..one of my family's all time favorites. Kirstie Alley, while bawdy and boisterous, lacks a key element...charm.

Here here, I agree wholeheartedly!

I can't imagine such a travesty lasting longer than the pilot. There is no need to Americanize this. It's thoroughly wonderful as is. It is impossible to imagine that any group in the States could do a decent job of it, certainly NOT with the annoying Ms. Alley! Of course, I never thought that the stupendously awful "Survivor" series would make it after I heard of it's concept, and look at the legs on that horror?!

In other words, it's America (land of my birth, FYI) and there's no accounting for taste. Thank heaven's for PBS and BBC America or we wouldn't have had nearly as much fun as we have had for the past 40 years or so.

I would take a watered down American version of The Vicar of Dibley over a lot of the stupid shows we currently have on the television. Just my thoughts on it.

FOX network is a bottom feeder which, I believe, is part of the Murdoch empire, well know for its lack of quality. I cannot imagine that any US fan of "Vicar" would enjoy a Foxified version. It's the bean counters all over again. They're the ones who try to increase the number of viewers by americanizing great product from overseas. Look at the American version of "The Singing Detective." What a disaster. The original version was perfect.

We used to have intelligent programming in the 50's when the medium was young. It's generally known as the golden age of television. Then the geniuses decided that the lowest common denominator would appeal to the broadest demographic & it's been downhill ever since. In order to get any kind of quality you have to turn to premium cable. And I'm sorry to say that even PBS is beginning to cave to corporate interests.

It usually bums me when they try to Americanize another country's best productions.
Like when Roseanne Barr did "The Life and Loves of a She-Devil," or Madonna did a re-make of "Swept Away." I think they even tried an American version of "Fawlty Towers." It's not like they're improving it.

Kirstie better not be settling in for the long run.

With all due respect, I think it will remain so for the forseeable future. I'm sure some of the more conservative Primates will be "reminded" at Lambeth that they have more important matters to attend to in their own Provinces without concerning themselves with other secular matters.

I beg to differ. I'm American, and my mother and I have watched the show for years. But since we're on the subject, what what kind of brit would watch "24"?

Saucybetty said, "And it's not like americans will watch a show about a minister anyway." Well, quite a few watched "7th Heaven" for a long time. Although I was not one of its viewers, I marvelled it managed to stay on the air so long.

Secondly, many of us are fans of the Vicar as portrayed by Dawn French so I think it only matters if we find the program entertaining or well-written.

Before she damaged her credibility by modeling her before and after body, Kirstie Alley was a funny actor. She was hysterical in "Cheers" and not totally awful in "Veronica's Closet." I read somewhere that Peri Gilpin and Jane Leeves tried for years to sell an American version of the Vicar of Dibley so I will anxiously await the American incarnation, hoping for the best. After all, if American Public Televsion has taken off the Vicar as well as the BBC American channel, we will have to have our fixes where we may.

Uhm, I'm American, not religious at all, but still enjoy Father Ted and The Vicar of Dibley.

That's an incredibly ignorant statement you've made, not to mention a SWEEPING generalization.

reply

Um, didn't the show Seventh Heaven run for 10 or 11 seasons? Apparently enough Americans watched it that the network ran an additional season they didn't plan on...

Since nothing has come of this as of the present time, I don't think the series is going to surface. I mention this in light of the rapid cancellation of The Book of Daniel, an NBC series detailing a fairly liberal Episcopal priest and his congregation and family. It did not take long for the ultra-conservative American "Religious Right" wing to whine and stamp their feet in order to cancel the show, which in my opinion was a shame.
