How does the book resolve the end of the first?

As per subject really - as I understand it the first book ends with FU committing suicide, whereas in the TV series he murders Mattie Storin. So how does the 2nd book resolve FU still being alive?

The second book is based off the ending of the TV series, not of the first book.
