Why did Sam and Malcolm use two monitors at once?

I know that Malcolm needed one to talk to Kilokahn while he used the other to do whatever he was doing at the time (including keeping an eye on the battles) and Sam's friends would also need to do other things while keeping an eye on Sam duing the battles, so again another monitor was needed.

However, both characters had them from the get-go, so what exactly did they use the second monitor for originally? It doesn't look like normal behavior to install two monitors for one computer...
