What happened to the rest of the world?

Were there cities like the free zone across the earth? Or did they just all die?

The mini-series does not touch it at all, and the book mentions it only in passing, but I gather that the rest of the world was wiped out as well.

Flagg is aware of others like him in other places, Iran is mentioned, and I believe that Russia and China were as well.

Then you had General Starkey telling his subordinate Len Creighton (or Carsleigh) to release the vials of the virus behind the Iron and Bamboo curtains. His attitude, as quoted in the book was 'share and share alike'.

So, yes; the world got it as well. This does not preclude the possibility that there were other communities like Boulder and Las Vegas, but they were the only ones specifically mentioned.

Hope this helps.

Starkey's decision to release the plague onto Russia and China was flat-out pure evil. It makes him nothing short of being a mass-murderer. Even though it's not mentioned in the book or the mini-series, I suspect he gave the same orders to other U.S. government agents working in all the countries of Europe as well.

As Glen Bateman puts it himself later on in the book the victim toll from the plague made what the Nazis did to the Jews look like child's play.

Were there a handful of survivors in Russia, China, France, Britain, as there were in America, we'll never know since King chose not to touch on that.

Would have made for an interesting sequel though....the possibility of other post-plague survivors in other nations. Another battle for good or evil (if not Flagg, then introduce another demonic evil determined to wipe out all of humanity for all time), but in other areas of the world.

One of the biggest flaws is that nothing is mentioned about survivors in the neighboring countries of Canada and Mexico. Some of the characters in the book talk about fleeing to Canada or Mexico, but what about the survivors already there? No mention of Canadians or Mexicans being drawn to Boulder or Las Vegas.
